George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg in group photo opportunity \u003cbr/\u003eThe prestigious American Film Institute paid tribute to the man who conceived the 'Star Wars' sub-culture last night (Thursday 9th June) , when it presented George Lucas with the 2005 AFI Life Achievement Award. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of Hollywood's highest honour, the award came as Lucas was bidding goodbye to his six-film sci-fi epic about the Skywalker clan, with the final chapter cruising to a $400 million plus (euro327 million) domestic haul.\u003cbr/\u003eLucas is the 33rd person to have been given, what is considered in the industry to be the highest honour for a career in film. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the gala, the great and the gracious from Hollywood toasted Lucas, watched clips from his movies, and celebrated his cinematic genius. \u003cbr/\u003eThe event was held at the Kodak Theatre and police closed down part of Hollywood Boulevard to accommodate the press and the stars. \u003cbr/\u003eAwards given out in the film industry are numerous, but for George Lucas the AFI Award is a special one, and one that he's very proud of: \"Well, this is the American Film Institute,\" said the filmmaker, \"it's an important institution and the people who have won this award before are important people, so to be included in that is wonderful.\u003cbr/\u003eThe AFI approached him a decade ago or more about the career prize, but Lucas, who turned 61 days before last month's debut of 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,' said he was too young.\u003cbr/\u003eNever a prolific filmmaker, Lucas has focused largely on 'Star Wars' since the mid-1970s, along with producing the 'Indiana Jones' movies and TV series. Before that, he was a filmmaking wunderkind who directed the cult sci-fi satire \"THX 1138\" and the enormously popular \"American Graffiti.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe AFI wheeled in a 1957 Chevy identical to the one used in 'American Graffiti' to stir up some memories of Lucas' rights-of-passage movie set in the last days of rock 'n' roll.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course, the films themselves are only part of Lucas' legacy. Star Wars' reinvigorated sci-fi and visual-effects films, and Lucas' Industrial Light \u0026amp; Magic outfit revolutionised the industry.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company also created special effects for many of Hollywood's modern spectacles, including 'Titanic,' 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' and the 'Jurassic Park,' 'Star Trek,' 'Terminator' and 'Harry Potter' flicks. Whilst ILM's advances in computer effects paved the way for such projects as 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.\u003cbr/\u003eLucas himself has been a key proponent of the gradual conversion from film to digital production and projection of movies. His last two 'Star Wars' movies were shot digitally, helping to drive a trickle-down effect of technology that allowed independent filmmakers to gain access to low-cost and flexible digital equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eLongtime pal Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg was selected to present the prize. Longtime friends since they were precocious kids wowing Hollywood in the early seventies, the two have grown into in movie colossi, and they plan to team up again (with Harrison Ford) for one more
