Wide of Clooney being interviewed\u003cbr/\u003eA day after meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, actor George Clooney met the media Wednesday (13 OCT 2010) at the National Press Club in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eClooney recently returned from Sudan, and is asking the U.S. and world community to use international pressure and robust diplomacy to prevent violence ahead of the Jan. 9 election in Africa's largest country. The election is an independence referendum on south Sudan that is likely to split the country in two, and there are fears that the vote could lead to a new outbreak of north-south civil war.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It has to begin with focused diplomacy of the highest alert,\" said Clooney. \"It has to be, you know, from the president to the Congress to the U.N. to the international community, all of them focused on a diplomatic answer to this in 88 days before this breaks into another armed conflict.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA 2005 peace agreement that ended a bloody 21-year civil war between Sudan's mostly Muslim north and predominantly animist and Christian south set up a unity government in the capital, Khartoum, as well as an autonomous government in the south. It called for the 2011 referendum on southern independence.\u003cbr/\u003eClooney was heavily involved in the Save Darfur campaign a few years ago and thinks that experience can only help prevent another tragedy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is one where now you can go back to the same people, because it's the same players,\" he said. \"It's (Sudanese President) Omar al-Bashir, it's the government of Khartoum, it's the same players, so we know what his other actions have been the two other opportunities he's had.
