including travel restrictions. \u003cbr/\u003eThey accused Israel of overreacting.\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 12th Palestinian and foreign protesters clashed with Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Hebron and the village of Beit Omar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protest in Hebron was held to demand the departure of Jewish settlers from the city. \u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli troops used tear gas and stun grenades against the protesters.  \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael captured Hebron when it seized the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan in the six-day war of 1967. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 600 Jews live in fortified enclaves in Hebron amid 170-thousand Palestinians. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile Palestinian protesters and foreign activists clashed with the Israeli military on July 12th in the West Bank village of Beit Omar.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters holding Palestinian flags and signs were prevented by the Israeli military to march forward with their protest.\u003cbr/\u003eTear gas and stun grenades were used to disperse the protesters, and at least five were detained.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protest in Beit Omar is held weekly against a nearby Jewish settlement and Israel's separation barrier, which Palestinians say is a land grab and separates farmers from their land. \u003cbr/\u003eOn August 17th Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati officially opened the Palestinian Embassy in Beirut on.\u003cbr/\u003eAbbas and Mikati also discussed plans to seek United Nations recognition of Palestine as an independent state.\u003cbr/\u003eLebanon, which is sympathetic to the Palestinian position, will chair the UN Security Council in September.\u003cbr/\u003eAbbas is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 21st.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 17th he said: \"While we are lifting the Palestinian flag here in Lebanon, we will go together to the United Nations to get a full membership for a Palestinian state in this global forum.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael opposes the UN recognition drive and insists, along with the US and many European countries, that the only way to set up a Palestinian state is through negotiations.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 18th an Israeli airstrike has killed six people in Gaza, including a child, Palestinian medical officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violence erupted on the afternoon of August 18th in response to a three-pronged attack on southern Israel by squads of gunmen operating out of the Sinai peninsula, near Israel's border with Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least eight Israelis were killed in the series of closely spaced attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli military said the attacks had been executed by a Hamas-linked group known as the Popular Resistance Committees, and that their objective had been to kidnap civilians or soldiers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Gaza strike killed five members of the group, including its commander, as well as the 3-year-old child of one of the militants, according to Hamas security officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli military said three of the dead men in Gaza had been involved in planning the attack.\u003cbr/\u003ePopular Resistance Committees spokesman, Abu Mujahid, would not comment on its alleged complicity in the earlier attacks but threatened retaliation for the deaths of the group's members.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Zionist enemy, in this escalation of assassinating the Secretary-General Abu Awad Al Nairab and the high commander Sheikh Immad Hammad and a number of the martyrs' leaders, opened the door for all the Palestinian factions to respond to this crime,\" he said, speaking outside a morgue in Rafah where the victims' bodies were taken.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hamas government in Gaza denied the militants' complicity, saying Gaza had nothing to do with the attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eGunfire was continuing into the evening from both sides of the Israel-Egypt border, Israeli defence officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 22nd Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip fired rockets and mortars into southern Israel, despite an unofficial truce meant to defuse days of escalating violence.\u003cbr/\u003eAround midday, a group that had held out from joining the cease-fire announced it would comply.\u003cbr/\u003eLieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, IDF (Israel Defence Forces) spokeswoman, said in response to the truce: \"Still today one million Israelis are close to shelters or in shelters because of the rocket fire.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe latest round of violence began with a deadly attack on Israelis near the Egypt-Israel border on August 18th. Israeli responded with a deadly round of Israeli airstrikes and rocket fire from Gaza.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 15 Palestinians, most of them gunmen, were killed in the air attacks. Eight Israelis died in the border attack and another was killed by rocket fire.\u003cbr/\u003eSome residents of the southern Israeli town of Beer Sheva weren't confident that the ceasefire would be maintained.\u003cbr/\u003eGaza's Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) had resisted joining the cease-fire because Israel assassinated several of its senior members in an airstrike on August 18th, accusing them of involvement in the border ambush, a Hamas official said on August 22nd. \u003cbr/\u003eHe spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to speak for the other group.\u003cbr/\u003eBut on the afternoon of August 22nd, the PRC told a news conference it would join the truce. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli military has made no official comment but privately defence officials say an unofficial cease-fire is in place. A government official said Israel would not formally announce a truce but reserved the right to operate militarily if threatened.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not able to discuss military policy for the record. \u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli president Shimon Peres visited Ashdod in southern Israel on August 22nd.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are against fire all the time. We did not start it. If they cease firing there will be a ceasefire,\" he told reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 9th dozens of Egyptian protesters attacked a security wall around the Israeli embassy in Cairo and set fire to a police truck outside.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also tried to attack a nearby police station but were turned back by the military.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier, protesters for the second time in less than a month pulled down the Israeli flag from atop the 21-story embassy building.\u003cbr/\u003eEgyptian security forces did not intervene as crowds climbed up the embassy's wall, pummelling it with sledge hammers and tearing away large sections of the cement and metal barrier.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wall had recently been put up to better protect the property from protests.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the fall of Egypt's former leader Hosni Mubarak, anti-Israeli sentiment among Egyptians and calls to end an historic 1979 peace treaty with Israel have grown. \u003cbr/\u003eAnger swelled in August after Israeli forces responding to a cross-border militant attack mistakenly killed five Egyptian police officers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protests also come at a time of change, seven months after a popular uprising drove Mubarak out of office. \u003cbr/\u003eEgyptians are pressing for urgent reforms, including more transparent trials of former regime figures accused of corruption, and for a clear timetable for parliamentary elections.\u003cbr/\u003eMany distrust the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, presently in charge of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe council, headed by Mubarak's former defence minister, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, has voiced its support for the revolution and those who called for democracy and justice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut activists accuse it of remaining too close to Mubarak's regime and of practicing similar repressive policies, including abusing detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe council has not set an exact date for the elections, although they are expected to take place some time in October or November.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 21st Israeli troops fired tear gas and clashed with protesters at the Qalandiya checkpoint as thousands gathered at rallies across the West Bank to show their support for the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to deliver a formal request for statehood recognition on September 23rd when he speaks to the General Assembly.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it could take weeks or months for the UN to act on the Palestinians' request.\u003cbr/\u003eMultiple rounds of tear gas were fired at the Qalandiya checkpoint towards protesters who in turn hurled stones across the barriers at the lines of Israeli troops.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile Shimon Peres, Israel's president urged the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table with Israel and avoid a unilateral step by turning to the UN. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also said that the UN could not guarantee Israel's security as a result of the membership of Iran and the existence of Arab and Muslim blocs within the organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile in the West Bank city of Ramallah an American flag was burned by demonstrators out in support of an independent Palestinian state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US has said it will use its veto at the UN Security Council to block any bid for statehood put forward by Abbas.\u003cbr/\u003eRallies were also held in Bethlehem and Nablus.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people held up banners and waved the Palestinian flag.\u003cbr/\u003eJibril Rajoub, a Palestinian Authority official at the Bethlehem rally said it was time for the international community to correct the \"fatal mistake\" made against the Palestinian people.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Nablus, demonstrators held up a chair to signify the seat of a Palestinian state at the UN.\u003cbr/\u003eWith peace talks deadlocked for the past three years, the Palestinians believe a strong international endorsement will improve their position in future negotiations.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the US is pushing for Abbas to drop the bid for full UN membership and instead seek an upgraded status in the world body.\u003cbr/\u003eMiddle East - Protesters cut through Israeli separation barrier, US activist sot\u003cbr/\u003eNr Semiramis - 9 July 2011\u003cbr/\u003e1.
