His defence lawyers contend the death penalty is racially  discriminatory. \u003cbr/\u003eAn international campaign is growing to block the sentence. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prosecution claims Abu-Jamal shot a police officer to death in 1981. Abu-Jamal  didn't take the stand during his trial, but his attorneys say he shot the policeman  because he was beating his brother.\u003cbr/\u003eAPTV spoke to the defendant at his jail. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe that it is a natural rights and principal of life for all people to defend  themselves. The point is  they tried to kill Panthers. It's growing by leaps and bounds in Europe. In West  Germany, in the Netherlands, in India of all places...we're getting responses from  people around the world. We believe that on the legal issues it's strong. But we can  never ignore the political issues. In a lot of ways when you look at the number of people  across America who are sentenced to death, take a look at the polls that say this wide  range of America wants the death penalty.
