Pan shot of the flags at the temple area\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nepalese government is hoping to attract hundreds of thousands of tourists and pilgrims to the place where Buddha was born, some 2,555 years ago in Lumbini.\u003cbr/\u003eFor millions of Buddhists all over the world , the scared birthplace of Buddha is one of the holiest sites but recent political upheaval has dissuaded some from making the pilgrimage.\u003cbr/\u003eReflected in the clear waters, this Buddhist temple in Lumbini is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists.\u003cbr/\u003eSituated at the foothills of the Himalayas , Lumbini is about 150 miles (240 kilometres) southwest of Nepal's capital city, Katmandu.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was here Buddha was born as Prince Sidhartha. Followers believe he abandoned his privileged life and meditated in the jungles of Nepal and India before achieving enlightenment.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Nepal is trying to convince pilgrims to return after a yearlong communist insurgency. \u003cbr/\u003e3,000 people gathered for the inauguration of the campaign (Saturday January 14, 2012) with Nepal's president Ram Baran Yadav also in attendance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe holy site of Lumbini has ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi tree, an ancient bathing pond, the Asoka pillar and the Mayadevi temple where people believe Buddha's mother Mayadevi rested before giving birth.\u003cbr/\u003eLumbini Garden has been developed with trees, ponds and monasteries and throughout the day visiting pilgrims can be seen chanting and meditating at the site.\u003cbr/\u003ePrivate tour operators say the time has now come to promote Lumbini as an international destination to bring in more investment in infrastructure.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We will probably have to let go of the conservative attitude of trying to keep Lumbini for ourselves. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents hope the resurgence of interest in the holy site will bring with it more resources for its development and more facilities for the tourists and
