But at the same time, it's a collection of works of phenomenal quality. Zoom out from painting to wide of visitors in gallery\u003cbr/\u003eOver 50 landmark abstract expressionist paintings, drawings and sculpture went on display in New York City on Monday, bringing together works by Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, Mark Rothko and other famous and lesser-known artists of the school.\u003cbr/\u003eThe works - collected mostly over a two-year period some 50 years ago - are part of the 63-piece Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection which Newman donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year.\u003cbr/\u003eNewman, an art collector with a background in painting, began collecting the works after visiting a New York art venue called \"The Club\" in 1949. \u003cbr/\u003eThere she met many of the painters who were to become part of the Abstract Expressionist movement. \u003cbr/\u003eWith her husband at the time, Jay Z Steinberg, Newman soon decided to focus on collecting works from the newest development in American art. \u003cbr/\u003eBy 1954 she had purchased paintings by de Konning, Kline, Rothko and one of the most famous works by American painter Jackson Pollock, entitled \"Number 28, 1950.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMetropolitan Museum of Art Curator Gary Tinterow, who organised the exhibition, said Pollock's work from that period is some of his best.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They're lyrical, they're expressive, they capture an amazing grace and sense of space with these lace-like forms of coloured paint, and this work is particularly colourful with pale blue and olive green and silver aluminium paint,\" Tinterow said.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing a painter herself, Newman had an excellent eye and feel for the works of what was then uncharted territory, Tinterow said. \u003cbr/\u003ePurchasing works by the better-known European modernists like Miro and Giacometti did not involve any major risk, but taking a chance on artists like Rothko, and Pollock for example, did.\u003cbr/\u003eParticularly between 1952-1954 when Newman did most of her buying.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection offered \"glimpse into a certain moment in American history and American artistic history,\" Tinterow noted.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At the same time, it's a collection of works of phenomenal quality. Mrs Newman had great insight into this newly formed art movement in New York City and and she bought key works by key artists at the time,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the death of Steinberg, Newman stopped collecting for several years, but she took it up again with her new husband, Albert Hardy Newman, adding works by Robert Motherwell, Hands Hofmann and Clyfford Still.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Newmans began to look for a permanent home for the collection in the 1970s and in 1980 promised it to the Metropolitan Museum. \u003cbr/\u003eThe actual gift was made in
