derived from seals.\u003cbr/\u003eEU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas - under mounting pressure to act against what animal rights groups claim is an inhumane hunt - is considering a ban on all seal products. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is expected to present measures on the issue within months, EU officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eCanada is facing renewed claims that the annual seal hunt off its eastern and northern coastlines is cruel, but Canadian officials say a ban would damage already-fragile, isolated communities that depend on the annual seal hunt for incomes and food.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecial Ambassador Loyola Sullivan, who was leading the delegation, said the hunt is a source of income for some of Canada's most disadvantaged people:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Prime Minister and the government of controversy resurfaced at the European Parliament and at EU headquarters as this year's hunt got under way last week in Canada.\u003cbr/\u003eSimilar hunts also are carried out in Greenland, Norway, Russia, Namibia and EU-member Finland, but Canada's hunt has faced the most scrutiny by\u003cbr/\u003eEuropean activists.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's hunt will be conducted under new rules, to appease European concerns, with extra steps added to make sure the animals are dead\u003cbr/\u003ebefore they are skinned - a recommendation made in an EU report released in December. \u003cbr/\u003eThat report was inconclusive on recommending a full EU ban.\u003cbr/\u003eCanadian authorities have set this year's total allowable catch at 275,000 seals, up from 270,000 last year. \u003cbr/\u003eSeventy percent of the seals will be taken in an area off Newfoundland's north coast known as the Front, while 30 percent will be taken in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - the first stage of the
