News conference ends, people disperse\u003cbr/\u003eThe 35-nation board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) met in Vienna on Wednesday to discuss indications that both Iran and Syria have hidden nuclear activities from IAEA inspectors.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking after the meeting, Glyn Davies, the US Ambassador to the IAEA, commented on concerns about Iranian secrecy about its nuclear ambitions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We believe that Iran's behaviour demonstrates that it believes, it believes, that it can prevent the IAEA from reporting a clear conclusion about the nature and the scope of its nuclear activities by not cooperating,\" Davies said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we are calling for, and many other member states are calling for, is for Iran to fully cooperate, something that the Iranians have not done now for the better part of a decade,\" Davies added.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the meeting, the European Union had also expressed concerns that Iran may be hiding work on developing a nuclear weapons programme, and suggested that Tehran was at fault for the abortive result of the last meeting between the Islamic Republic and the six world powers. \u003cbr/\u003eThose December talks ended with Iran refusing to address international fears that its nuclear activities could be turned into making weapons.\u003cbr/\u003eIran insists its activities are meant only to generate reactor fuel.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's IAEA board meeting follows remarks on Monday by the head of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, who said he could not guarantee that Iran was not trying to develop atomic arms, comments that reflect the lack of progress in his attempts to investigate Tehran's nuclear programme.\u003cbr/\u003eAmano's comments follow even stronger warnings in a confidential report last month, when he said Iran may be working on a secret nuclear weapons programme even now.\u003cbr/\u003eHis comments were similar to previous statements, pointing to a lack of IAEA progress since he took office 15 months ago to prove or disprove US and other intelligence alleging hidden experimental nuclear weapons work by Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause Iran also refuses to give the agency more intrusive inspecting powers it also cannot follow up on concerns that Tehran might be enriching uranium at sites it has not declared.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN Security Council has slapped four sets of sanctions on Tehran for its refusal to stop enriching, which Iran says it needs to make fuel for a future reactor network but which can also be used to make the fissile core of nuclear warheads.\u003cbr/\u003eEnrichment for peaceful purposes is allowed under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. But the Islamic Republic's nuclear secrecy has added to concerns. \u003cbr/\u003eBeyond refusal to cooperate with the IAEA programme of alleged nuclear weapons programmes experiments, its enrichment programme was clandestine until a dissident group revealed it nearly a decade ago.\u003cbr/\u003eDavies also commented on North Korea's non-compliance with IAEA requests.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's a lot of concern about the revelations that we've all now been made privy to about what the North Koreans have been up to, and I think it makes it even more imperative and important that the North Koreans take steps to address the concerns of the world community,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That's where we are, and the ball is in North Korea's court to act.
