Mid shot of two Khon dancers performing on stage\u003cbr/\u003eUntil recently, Thailand's most cherished dance form, known as Khon, was on the verge of disappearing. \u003cbr/\u003eRapid westernisation over the past few decades altered Thailand's cultural landscape and very few were practicing the dance. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now, a group of devoted young people in Bangkok are trying to keep the tradition alive.\u003cbr/\u003eStudents at Bangkok's Ramkangheang University rehearse Thailand's most revered form of dance, known as Khon.\u003cbr/\u003eMastering the dance takes dedication, balance and patience. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough many Thais adore Khon, practice of the 3,000 year-old dance form has decreased rapidly over the past 20 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThese students are helping to keep it from dying out completely. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel proud of Khon dancing in Thailand,\" says dancer Natanong Autaumma. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When I was a child, I loved the dance, but not many people were interested in it. As dancers, we try our best and teach other young people who wouldn't otherwise have a chance to learn it. We want to promote Khon dancing so we will have it forever.\" \u003cbr/\u003eKhon is a dance form inspired by epic tales in the Thai Ramakien drama that was adapted from the India's Ramayana. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was originally performed in the royal courts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dance consists of four sets of characters: Hanuman, the monkey warrior; Totsakan, the demon; Rama, the righteous king; and princess Sita. \u003cbr/\u003eSome postures require dancers to move very slowly and stay very concentrated. \u003cbr/\u003eOther moves are more aerobic and physically demanding.\u003cbr/\u003eMaster instructors guide students closely, helping them learn the different postures. \u003cbr/\u003eAll teachers in Thailand are highly respected, but instructors of classical drama and the arts enjoy a particularly distinguished status.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Pride is the main reason we are teaching the dance,\" says instructor Thummachak Prompuay. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Some students have never practiced the dance before and are just starting to train. This makes it easier to learn and for us to teach them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs students practice, teachers watch closely and make the necessary adjustments.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the moves are very similar to martial arts poses.\u003cbr/\u003eDancers improve their powers of concentration, flexibility and fitness. \u003cbr/\u003eStudents repeat the most difficult poses countless times, making sure they get them just right.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly a select group of talented and dedicated dancers are chosen to perform. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore taking to the stage, performers dress in elaborate costumes that are often heavy and uncomfortable. \u003cbr/\u003eMany roles in Khon dance require very athletic performances, so costumes are fitted and tailored just right to avoid embarrassing rips or tears on stage.\u003cbr/\u003eMany centuries ago, Khon performers didn't wear masks - the faces of characters were painted on the dancers. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the desire to create a more permanent way of identifying characters, saw masks introduced. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, they are the most important part of the costume.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to tradition, when a master carver builds a mask, he asks sacred spirits to enter it before it is used on stage.\u003cbr/\u003eFor performers who play monkey roles, masks create many challenges. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have little ventilation.\u003cbr/\u003eTo keep masks from falling off, especially during acrobatic moves, performers keep them in place with cords clenched in their teeth. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When the performers look out through the mask, it's as if they are in the dark,\" says dancer Nitiwoot Thongkham. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The only place where they can see light is through the eye holes in the mask, and you can only see straight ahead. I would like everyone to come practice Khon together so we can keep it alive in the future.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThailand's Ministry of Culture has announced plans to establish a National Khon Institute in Bangkok. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's set to be built by 2012 to mark the Thai Queen's 80th birthday. \u003cbr/\u003eMany more Thais will then have the chance to train in the dance and keep the tradition
