Anastacio Somoza Debalye held the position of Nicaraguan President from 1967 to 1972 and then again from 1974 to 1979. As head of the National Guard, he effectively continued to hold power in the intervening years. In December 1972, an earthquake hit the nation's capital Managua, killing around ten thousand people, and virtually destroying the city. Martial law was declared, making Debayle, as head of the National Guard, the country's leader once again. It was later discovered that the Somoza family had embezzled much of the international aid which had been sent to help with the aftermath of the earthquake. Despite this, Debayle was re-elected President in the 1974 election, although the Catholic church had begun to speak against him. By the late 1970s, human rights groups were condemning the record of the Somoza family's government, and support for the Sandinistas was growing in the country. They eventually overthrew Debayle on July 17 1979. Debayle was assisinated by Sandinista agents the following year in Paraguay. In June of 1979, the stone roads were dug up in cities across Nicaragua and used to make barricades as fighting against the National Guard began. At the same time, people around the world witnessed the execution of Bill Stewart, an ABC newsman, by Somoza's National Guard and sympathies were immediately focused on the Sandinistas. Bill Stewart and his crew had been shooting video of an area of Managua being held by Somoza's forces. Their van stopped at a checkpoint by an 18-year old Nicaraguan national guardsman. The young guardsman ordered Stewart to step out of the van. Veteran ABC Cameraman Jack Clark, riding just behind the front seat, began rolling his camera through the window, and documented the guardsman forcing Stewart to his knees, aiming his rifle at Stewart's head and firing. On July 17 1979, Somoza left Nicaragua and on the 19th, the FSLN entered Managua and declared complete and unconditional victory\u003cbr/\u003e1. interior press conference, ms ABC news sound man, Jim
