accessories.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one British furniture designer, resident in Stockholm is now challenging the Swedish taste for functional items over imaginative designs. \u003cbr/\u003eSimon Davies is a British interior design consultant who has been living in Stockholm for the past 12 years.\u003cbr/\u003eDavies runs an interior design shop in Stockholm and also comments on design on Swedish television.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says his goal in life is trying to convince Swedes their taste for design is old fashioned.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also says when it comes to interior design they are quite conformist.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Swedish design is spreading its influence across the globe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Swedish furniture and home accessories shop Ikea has outlets around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the recent months the chain has opened two shops in Tokyo, one in Beijing, and one in Turkey. \u003cbr/\u003eThe chain is taking Swedish design to the world and promoting a few Swedish design principles along the way - that design can be practical, elegant and low-cost.\u003cbr/\u003eCustomers Carl and Patricia say the chain reflects the country's passion for simple practical styles. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the top end of the the design budget is a shop that sells furniture in the style of Carl Malmsten. \u003cbr/\u003eMalmsten was one of Sweden's most famous designers and many consider him to be the father of Swedish furniture design.\u003cbr/\u003eHe died in 1972 but his shop in Stockholm still sells well-crafted furniture and home accessories.\u003cbr/\u003eMalmsten's grandson Jerk, is also a designer.\u003cbr/\u003eJerk Malmsten says that Swedish customers are anxious to know what materials have been used in the making of the furniture. \u003cbr/\u003eSwedes have high expectations in furniture design, even when it is made on a large scale, like the Ikea range. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Simon Davies says that the British have a sense of humour when it comes to design - something Swedes could learn from.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the Swedes are obsessed with functionality and have no sense of fun.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one shopper
