worried that an annual pilgrimage to a Hindu shrine in the mountains of India-administered Kashmir could cause an "ecological disaster."
They're calling for more to be done to tackle waste that's left behind by the soaring number of people who make the journey to the Amarnath Cave.
Hindus believe it to be God's miracle.
Thousands of pilgrims are making their way to Amarnath Cave Temple - zig-zagging their way through the mountains.
As water begins to freeze every year in the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, an icy stalagmite - considered to depict Lord Shiva's phallic symbol - is created in the distant cave.
The pilgrims take one to three days to reach the temple.
The distance is nearly 145 kilometres from Kashmir's capital Srinagar.
But the ecologically sensitive area - home to glaciers and rivers - is suffering from pollution because of the rising number of people passing through the area.
If left unchecked, this damage could be disastrous, warn some environmentalists.
The yatra - as it's known - has been taking place for decades and the number of people visiting the cave until a few years ago was just a few thousand.
But, in the recent years, that number has multiplied to hundreds of thousands.
The pilgrim season usually lasts around 45 days between July and August.
That's when the Shiva Lingam (Shiva's phallic symbol) forms and the weather is optimal for travelling.
It's thought the summer months of July and August brought roughly 622,000 people in 2012 and 350,000 in 2013.
When a mountain region such as this suddenly has to accommodate tens of thousands of people, it upsets the fragile eco-system and threatens the glaciers and wildlife habitats.
Experts fear that Kashmir could be the next Uttarakhand-type disaster waiting to happen.
In 2013, more than 1,000 people died due to flash floods in Uttarakhand, many were on their way to the Kedarnath Temple, another popular pilgrim centre.
For the most part, the floods and the massive damage they caused were believed to have been due to the consistent negligence and abuse of the mountainous terrain.
What happened in Uttarakhand has now put the focus on places like Amarnath which face similar threats due to the large influx of people.
"So we have yatra (pilgrimage) for 44 days and we have approximately around 10 to 15 thousand yatries (pilgrims) per day," says Rakesh Kumar Gupta, CEO of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, an organisation that manages the temple.
"So if you assume that the whole day, whole period is covered by this number, then it's a very large number, it's about five to six lakhs (unit of currency: 100,000)."
Close to campsite areas, rubbish is strewn by the sides of paths.
This garbage, when left untreated, finds its way into the glaciers and rivers, polluting the otherwise clean landscapes.
Kashmir is dependent on the rivers Lidder and Sind which have their sources here.
According to Professor Shakeen Ahmad Ramshoo, when these rivers are polluted at the source, it affects the entire Kashmir valley.
He's an environmentalist and Head of department of Earth Sciences at the University of Kashmir.
"When you allow 30,000 people to go for the yatra, for pilgrimage, and there's a lot of huge generation of the wastes, I mean you have to provide facilities for them, there are no facilities there, and there is no solid waste disposal, scientific disposal of the solid wastes, there is no scientific disposal of the liquid wastes that comes out of the eateries that have been established there," he says.
"So all is this is polluting the water bodies there, and if you look at these two system, the Lidder system and the Sind, you know these two water shed systems are very important for the water supplies for the irrigation, for all the waters that the valley of Kashmir receives and now they are being polluted at the source."
There are two routes to reach the Amarnath Temple, located approximately 13,000 feet above sea level.
One is the longer Pahalgam route which takes two nights and three days.
The other is via Baltal, a more treacherous but shorter path which takes around a day.
Only a few tourists walk, many use a horse along with a guide or a palanquin carried by four Kashmiris.
This addition of guides or carriers significantly raises the number of people walking along the paths.
As the 30,000-odd people make their way to the temple, they cook, eat, bathe and defecate in the open.
Community kitchens called 'langers' are set-up to serve food to tourists, while small restaurants also cater to them.
The Amarnath Shrine Board says they've set-up sewage treatment plants to treat the waste from these kitchens and elsewhere at the base camps.
"The board has taken a number of measures, several important measures, to ensure that almost all wastes, which include the bio-degradable and the non-biodegradable wastes clear from the yatra," says Kumar Gupta.
"The board has set up two major sewage treatment plants at the base camps, one at Nunwan near Pahalgam and the second at Baltal, on the Baltal axis and these are connected to all the toilets and all the langer (community kitchens) wastes which come there that is treated by the sewage treatment plant."
Despite that, food and material waste from these kitchens finds its way into dumps along the glaciers, also into ravines and gorges.
While there's a ban on polythene bags in this region, tourists often bring their own bags and dump them along the paths.
That's perhaps because there's been no proper educational drive to inform people about being conscious of the waste they throw away.
A "Leave No Trace" policy hasn't been adopted like many tour operators in other Himalayan regions.
Those encourage tourists to bring their waste back with them.
Some agencies such as the Border Security Force have been cleaning up rubbish, especially the polythene which accumulates here.
"Every person visiting the area should think consciously about not throwing polythene on the roads and about using the dustbins, as the glaciers' presence makes it a very sensitive ecological zone," says Arun Kumar Singh, a commandant for the Border Security Force.
"BSF (Border Security Force) sometimes initiates cleanliness drives to protect the environment. We do both work - providing security and keeping the area clean, in order to protect the environment and secure it for the coming generations."
Shakeel Ahmad Ramshoo says the government of Kashmir and other authorities should intervene now to prevent disaster.
"I think it is high time that the government of Jammu and Kashmir, the Amaranth Shrine Board, the civil society of this place take very concrete and credible measures for ensuring that this yatra is sustainable and at the same time the wastes, the degradation of the environment that's created because of this unrestricted numbers of pilgrims that visit there is put to you know, as I said the determined carrying capacity of the system," he says.
"If that is not done, God forbid, in the times to come we may have a situation where there will be an ecological disaster in this region."
AP Television
Anantnag, India-administered Kashmir - 7 July 2014
1.
