Wages are so low that many find themselves struggling to eat, let alone save.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the family of one young woman, the dream has been broken by tragedy within the very industry where it was created.\u003cbr/\u003eMoushumi - who like many people in Bangladesh was known by only one name - was just 18 when she died in a fire, along with 111 others trapped behind the locked gates of the Tazreen garment factory last November. \u003cbr/\u003eNow Moushumi lies buried in a simple grave in a clearing a short walk from the house her death helped build. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family gathers there each Friday to pray for her.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People join the garment factories due to hardships, don't they? Would someone well-off go there?\" said her mother, Hawa Begum, who worked with her daughter at the Tazreen factory.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My daughter had to be married off as she was growing up. We needed money as no one is ready to marry the girls without a dowry. We lacked the resources and that is why we went there (to the factory) to earn money.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMoushumi's family renovated their home using the 600-thousand takas (7,700 US dollars) they received in compensation for her death.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a poor village like Tekani, in the country's far northwest, that represents a small fortune - but her family say they would return the money in an instant to have Moushumi back with them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the past, we lacked the means, but even though we had to save some rice from one meal to use for the next, the family was together at that time. We were happy. Now we have some money, but not peace in our hearts. At the end of it all, a life has been lost,\" said Begum.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammad Rubel left Tekani more than two years ago to work in the garment industry, drawn by the prospect of steady employment and the ability to save. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says the current wage rate is far below what workers need to pay their bills and eat properly.\u003cbr/\u003eAdding to his woes, he said he was often paid late and was sometimes cheated out of overtime. \u003cbr/\u003eHe found himself buying food on credit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They had made a commitment to pay our wages on the fifth of each month but they would not pay us for days after that. And we had to make due payments to the grocer for supplies,\" Rubel said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe gave up after six months and returned home to the village.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If they give us proper facilities there, I'll join again. But considering the situation right now, you know, fires are breaking out in garment factories, buildings are collapsing and people are dying, so I don't feel like working in the garment factories again.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince the Tazreen fire and the collapse in April of the Rana Plaza factory building, which killed 1,129 people, Bangladesh's garment industry has been under increased pressure from workers and activists to raise wages and improve working conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile many workers have left the factories, some have stuck it out, holding on to the dream of saving enough money to eventually move back home.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-two-year-old Mosammat Angura Begum left Tekani with her husband three years ago to work in a garment factory in the Ashulia suburb of the capital, Dhaka.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We grew up in the village and so we did not want to leave, as nobody wants to leave their parents and go to Dhaka,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"But poverty forced me to come to Dhaka. I have come here to earn money for to live and to save some of it for my future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe couple's combined monthly salary of about 10-thousand takas (128 US dollars) is quickly eaten up by rent, utility bills, food and household goods. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a good month they can save 2,500 takas (32 US dollars), sending some back to Tekani to help care for their daughter and saving the rest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government agreed last month to set up a committee to look into raising the minimum wage.\u003cbr/\u003eIt currently stands at 38 US dollars per month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last
