investment in the failing medical sector. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors launched a nationwide open-ended strike in May, demanding a pay raise amid complaints that the Polish health system is underfunded and medical professionals are overworked.\u003cbr/\u003eLow wages have spurred thousands of doctors and nurses to move abroad for better-paid jobs, primarily to Britain and Ireland, since Poland joined \u003cbr/\u003ePaluszkiewicz says economic investment and increased salaries is needed to prevent Poland facing an even greater shortage of doctors in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eMaciej Jedrzejowski, is the leader of the striking doctors at Banacha Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that despite the end of Communism in Poland in 1989, doctors are still being paid according to Socialist rules. \u003cbr/\u003eMaja Mucha is a fifth year medical student, who says that when she graduates she hopes to be able to live with her family near the Polish German border, so she can work as a doctor in the German town of Schwedt which is only 30 kilometres (18 miles) from her home.\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said in May the doctors' demands are unrealistic this year, adding that such a pay increase would cost an estimated $3.9 billion and would \"break public finances.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe said health care wages should increase starting next year.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors have suggested charging patients nominal fees for some services to help fund changes to the health system. \u003cbr/\u003eBasic health care in Poland is free.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe lack of funds has
