women even more way of travelling alone. \u003cbr/\u003eIn order to win the loyalty of women customers several cab firms in the city have launched mobile applications which not only lets them book a taxi within seconds but also offers tracking services and emergency alerts.\u003cbr/\u003eSonia Rana, who works for one such cab company, Meru Cabs is using her company's cab to get back home at the end of her working day.\u003cbr/\u003eRana has located a cab two kilometers (1.2 miles) from her workplace and has booked it and received a confirmation SMS with the name of the driver, his exact co-ordinates on the map, the number plate, colour and make of the car that's booked.\u003cbr/\u003eAdditionally, through the app, she can also add the mobile number of a family member who will get periodic updates with her GPS co-ordinates, all along the commute.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As soon as I board the cab, even if it is 1 AM, ok, he (her father) gets the update out there that I have already boarded the cab and my�with my current location and every fifteen minutes, my father, ok, he gets the update with the location details,\" says Rana.\u003cbr/\u003eAt any given time, employees at Meru also have access to view the location of every taxi on duty in their fleet, the details of the chauffeur and the speed at which the cab is going in.\u003cbr/\u003eRana says she doesn't like taking public transport as she fears for her safety.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, sometimes, she has to take auto rickshaws or buses as cabs are not the most economical option in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eNow when she is taking an autorickshaw, she uses a feature called the \"ICE Alert\" built into the Meru mobile app.\u003cbr/\u003eICE, an acronym for \"In case of emergency\", when invoked, sends out an SOS alert with her location via text message to the emergency contacts predefined by her.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ICE alert can be used even if the person is not using a cab used by the company.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If I suspect the chauffeur, if I suspect someone, it's easy to say that I can call up people for help, or I can shout, maybe I will not be able to shout at that time right. So, it's a better way�obviously it's a better way to you know make anyone aware that I am in a problem so you come and save my life,\" says Rana.\u003cbr/\u003eBut cabs are expensive option for women, the average cab journey within the city can cost from Rs150 (approx $2.5)  to Rs1000 (apx $16). \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a recent report released by The Delhi State Government, the per capita income in Delhi for example, according to latest statistics is around Rs 2,00,000 (apx USD3200). That comes to an average monthly salary of roughly 16600 Rs (apx $260). Starting salaries will be much lower.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gang rape and death of a student in New Delhi in December last year led to mass protests across the country and forced the government to introduce tougher rape laws and provide helpline numbers for women who believe they are in jeopardy. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also prompted nationwide soul searching on the way women are treated in India. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the government's efforts, crimes against women are still being perpetrated and the onus for safety still remains with the woman.\u003cbr/\u003ePrivate IT companies also, as a goodwill gesture, launched many free apps aimed at women, after the Dec 16 gang rape.\u003cbr/\u003eTelerik India is one such company that designed an application which can be used by women during emergency situations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app, SafeBridge, was judged the best app for women safety by Nasscom (The National Association of Software and Services Companies) in a competition.\u003cbr/\u003eSafeBridge has a \"Help Me\" button that can be pressed when a woman is at risk.\u003cbr/\u003eIt sends out a text message, with the exact latitude and longitude, to the pre-set emergency numbers on the person's phone.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We had a lady who just mentioned that she was saved because she could inform their parents in time because of the app. Because it's very difficult to actually call when there is some trouble but it's very discreet to simply press a button and send an SMS,\" says Abhishek Kant, Country Head of Telerik India.\u003cbr/\u003eEveryday, thousands of women in Delhi take public transport to commute to and from their workplace, school or college.\u003cbr/\u003eThe discretion apps like SafeBridge offer is useful for women, especially for those travelling at night, to alert their loved ones in case of emergency without drawing attention to themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of women students from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in New Delhi, with the help of a professor, designed a mobile application, which has won an award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app, \"Safe Safari\" is designed by a group called \"Precog\" with Paridhi Jain, Neha Gupta, Megha Arora and professor Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, and has still not been officially launched.\u003cbr/\u003eNeha Gupta explains that her own experiences of living in Delhi contributed to this app's design.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you actually look at people staring at you it makes you feel uncomfortable. At that point of time where you are alone and when you see people staring at you and you know that many such incidents keep happening in Delhi�every now and then. So it makes you feel really really insecure and I've also noticed, experienced many a things when you travel in buses and everything, so it's something which you cannot actually� all you have to do is, you have to stay quiet because even if you react nothing actually works, in your situation.\"\u003cbr/\u003esays Gupta.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Safe Safari\" is designed in such a way as to pre-empt a potentially risky situation by suggesting a \"safe route\" for a woman to travel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app is designed to give a \"safe commute route\" through Google Maps when a woman wants to travel from one place to another, taking into account several factors including \"crime scores\" derived from crimes reported in the locality.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The woman actually sends a request for going from place A to place B and the system is going to come back saying 'here is the best transit position' and it is also going to mark different police stations on it and its going to say that, we are going to create something called as the crime score which will actually have this information about the FIRs (First Information Reports from police stations) filed for women problems in that particular police station or in the entire transit that the woman is going to take,\" says Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, Professor, IIIT.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app, designed with multiple layers of security, has other features like showing the list of police stations along the route and also sounding an alert when the cab or bus driver is taking the woman on a different route than the one intended.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile women in Delhi are aware of the limitations of applications like these, they use such technology as an added layer of safety since it's not administration-dependent.\u003cbr/\u003eMegha Arora says, \"Technology definitely makes me feel safer. There are apps with which I can send a GPS (Global Positioning System) my movement to my relatives and every time I am feeling unsafe, I can contact people, I can contact police stations, the helpline numbers. See, technology is not administration dependent. So, administration not working, therefore technology gives me a back-up kind of feeling that I have something to rely on.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile these apps seem to give women a sense of security, most of them require a smartphone with GPS and internet facilities for the technology to work efficiently, restricting their usage only to those who can afford these devices.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the latest reports (May 2013) by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, there are around 900 million mobile phone connections in India.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, only 6% of these subscribers own smartphones according to a report by the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield \u0026amp;amp; Byers (KPCB) ('2013 Internet trends' report) .\u003cbr/\u003eNew Delhi -  October 17, 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
