the southern state of Kerala, recent instances of suspected leopard poisoning have alarmed both the environmentalists and wildlife officials.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the wildlife habitats shrinking worldwide, escalating tensions between humans and animals is threatening the already dwindling big cat population in India.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the southern state of Kerala, recent instances of suspected leopard poisoning have alarmed both the environmentalists and wildlife officials.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile allegations are being investigated that the local population is targeting the big cats which are straying into human habitats, villagers say they have no protection against the animals attacking them.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith nearly 26% forest cover, Wayanad wildlife park is home to plants and animals, including several endangered species.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor villagers living around the sanctuary, this also means frequent encounters with leopards straying into their fields in search of food.\u003cbr/\u003eFor some of these animals, the search ended in death.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment and wildlife officials confirm that some instances of leopards being killed by poisoning have been reported. \u003cbr/\u003eLeopards are protected under the Indian Wildlife Act and their killing is punishable by up to six years imprisonment. \u003cbr/\u003eBinoy Viswom, the Kerala Forestry Minister, says they will investigate the allegations of leopard poisoning.\u003cbr/\u003eTraps set up by the Forest Department have captured some of the cats which are straying.\u003cbr/\u003eDeepak Misra, a wildlife warden at Wayanad wildlife sanctuary says the leopards are then relocated out of the villages and back into the sanctuary. \u003cbr/\u003eBut cats have been attacking cattle and villagers, creating a sense of panic in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eSasi, a farmer, says he was on his way to the fields when a leopard pounced on him.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was bitten in his leg but somehow managed to escape.\u003cbr/\u003eSasi says his close brush with death has frightened the entire village - and the government is offering no protection to the people.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers also say the authorities are more concerned about saving wild animals than saving human lives.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a classic case of man versus animal as people choose to live closer to wildlife reserves and forests, blurring the boundaries between human and animal habitats.\u003cbr/\u003eMohan Babu, from the Wayanad Nature Lovers Association says people are living in the animal's environments and that is why they are being attacked. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far, wildlife conservationists have blamed poachers for the reported leopard deaths, saying they trap and shoot and poison the cats for their body parts and skins.\u003cbr/\u003eLeopard skins found in the wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad is proof of the thriving illegal trade in animal skins.\u003cbr/\u003eBut nature lovers warn that habitat loss may lead to the extinction of many endangered species.\u003cbr/\u003ePoaching has already decimated India's big cat populations.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the increasing demand for land and forest resources for human livelihoods is now threatening to tip the balance that preserves Wayanad's diverse eco-system.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is not just a problem in the state of Kerala however.\u003cbr/\u003eIn January 2007 villagers in Indian controlled Kashmir chased and beat to death a leopard they suspected of having injured two local boys.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers repeatedly hit the leopard with sticks and
