Dozens of airplanes queue to land on runway 7R.\u003cbr/\u003eOn average, there's a landing every five minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eAt present all flights in Spain as well as everywhere else in the world descend using air corridors when traffic controllers authorise pilots to do so.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a new greener and more economic system is being gradually introduced in the Spanish skies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn future - air traffic and visibility permitting - airplanes will put their engines into idle and start a direct descent towards the runway gliding - relying on their wing surface rather than engine power.\u003cbr/\u003eThe measure comes as a result of a crisis-ridden airline industry that is also blamed for global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is flight IB1445 bound for Madrid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Airbus A320 is being flown by Captain Jose Luis Moreta Gomez and first officer Juan Perez.\u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Jose Luis Moreta Gomez has being flying the A320 series since it was introduced in Iberia 20 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eWith more than 14.000 flight hours to his name he is one of the most experienced A320 pilots in Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eAt 9,000 metres altitude (29,527.56 feet), captain Moreta and first officer Juan Perez put the engines on idle and begin gliding the Airbus toward Madrid's Barajas airport for a fuel-cutting green landing.\u003cbr/\u003eDescending onto Baraja's runway 33R, Moreta explains the advantages of the new system:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Once we are given authorisation to descend to a certain level we try to do this without applying more thrust power - switching on idle power instead. All this depends of course on air traffic, weather and airport congestion.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe 320 family - which includes the 319, 320 and 321 series - and the Boeing 737's are the most used airplane types for short and mid distance flights within Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eA mid size airplane like the A320 emits an estimated 9 tons of CO2 during a 1000 kilometre (621 mile) flight.  That's 9.14 kilo (19.8 pounds)  per kilometre (0.6 miles).\u003cbr/\u003eBy descending into Madrid's Barajas airport with idle engines this A320 will save a minimum of 100 kilos (220 pounds) of kerosene, avoiding the release of nearly a ton of CO2 into the atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eFirst officer Perez explains that landing an airplane on idle is a bit like going downhill by car in neutral gear.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean, you can go ninety kilometres per hour on neutral gear with a constant speed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIberia - Spain's flagship airline - is responsible for the introduction of the new landing system.\u003cbr/\u003eOther carriers like Air France, Icelandair and TAP Portugal are also implementing similar environmentally friendly strategies.\u003cbr/\u003eThis giant hangar houses Iberia's maintenance centre of \"La Munoza\", one of the largest in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eTechnicians are performing a major revision of this A340-600, the largest model in the fleet.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore starting checks on the A320's the new system was tested on larger airplanes like this one.\u003cbr/\u003eJaime Garcia Blasque is the head of the Department of Environment of Iberia.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the airline sector is increasingly aware of the large environmental footprint it leaves behind.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a manoeuvre that requires close contact and collaboration with air traffic control authorities. Iberia has actively participated in this project throughout 2009. This is about opening new navigational routes and spaces in a shared military and civil environment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLanding on idle also means a more comfortable ride for the passenger.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new system shortens landing time by three or four minutes reducing the noise in the cockpit some six decibels and smoothing air turbulence.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the idea of gliding down to earth on board a jetliner may sound a bit scary to some passengers.\u003cbr/\u003ePepe Alcaide is flying back home in Malaga after a weekend break in Barcelona.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that it can be dangerous. I agree with it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs green intentioned as it might sound the new landing scheme hasn't been received with excessive enthusiasm among environmental campaigners.\u003cbr/\u003eSara Picinato is from Greenpeace's transport campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eShe thinks the new measures are too little, too late.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, Europe and the rest of the rich countries grow every year at unsustainable rates.
