Mid of family walking past shacks\u003cbr/\u003eCape Town's Khayelitsha, one of South Africa's largest and poorest townships, is home to the country's first public animation academy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe creators of the world-famous cartoon characters, Wallace and Gromit, rolled into town, to open the centre which is now bringing hope to dozens of young people. \u003cbr/\u003eThese are the dusty streets of Khayelitsha, a township with an estimated population of 900,000 renowned for its poverty and violence.\u003cbr/\u003eMakeshift dwellings clutter this mass sprawling township, with residents struggling to find enough money for one meal a day.\u003cbr/\u003eUnemployment is high and those lucky enough to have work are mostly low earning domestic workers, gardeners and builders.\u003cbr/\u003eOpportunities for the young are far and few between in this corner of the world, where gang violence and looting seem to be a better option that attending school.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now there may just be something to smile about.\u003cbr/\u003eThe magic and wonder of animation has come to stay in this deprived township.\u003cbr/\u003eA joint initiative between the Cape Film Commission, False Bay College and British Oscar winners Aardman Studios, means deprived youths from Khayelitsha and neighbouring Mitchell's Plain now have a chance to become world class animators.\u003cbr/\u003eAardman studios, best known for its stop motion clay animations from Wallace and Gromit to Chicken Run, Flushed Away to Morph, are opening South Africa's open first public animation academy.\u003cbr/\u003eDavid Sproxton, one of the co-founders of Aardman studios, flew over for the official opening ceremony.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat makes the Animation Academy so special is its close working relationship and endorsement by British-based Aardman Studios, a unique opportunity to scout for local talent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe packed classrooms bear testimony to the overwhelming interest in animation being shown by local students.\u003cbr/\u003eStefaney Samuels, a student from the Animation Academy, says she wants to develop her own style. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Mostly I'm inspired by Anime but don't want to make it all Anime because I want to also put like South African to it also putting my own kind of animation style into it,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eTeachers carefully coach the children in Walt Disney's classical 28 principles of 2D animation.\u003cbr/\u003eProgramme Manager for Animation, Gary Kachelhoffer, is confident about the local pool of talent, but insists the Academy isn't available to all.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's really aimed at the previously disadvantaged people, but there are qualifications.They have to have a grade 12 or Matric to get into the course,as well as a portfolio requirement.They have to have a certain amount of drawing skills and we will add to this drawing skills,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eA major Hollywood-style studio being built just a few kilometres from Khayelitsha is now nearing completion. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities believe Cape Town's reputation as a cheap movie destination and the shortage of local animators could ensure Khayelitsha's young artists have a place in the region's future film industry.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's the raw talent and will to succeed of these students that makes the opening of South Africa's first public animation academy all that more significant.\u003cbr/\u003eAcademy student Thembelani Kwaza says his dream is to become a successful animator.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have dreams in life. In the future, I want to be a successful animator. I want to do movies, I want to make beautiful cartoons. That's where I want to be in the future because everyone in life has a dream, so I would like to see my dream succeed, that is why I enjoy it,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Animation Academy believes
