time no longer as the same appeal. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now dog wheel chairs are giving disabled dogs a new lease of life. \u003cbr/\u003eAlready common in the United States, they are finding a market in dog crazy Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eMomotan is an eight year old Welsh Corgi. \u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the removal of a hernia, she lost the use of her back  legs.  \u003cbr/\u003eParalysis was gradual and occurred over the course of two years.  \u003cbr/\u003eHer owner, Akebono Katsue, explains that when Momotan became unable to walk with the aid of a supporting harness, her vet suggested that she looked for a wheel chair.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe model that she chose is known as Willmog and came from what at first glance might appear to be an unlikely source.  \u003cbr/\u003eOX Engineering, began life in 1976 making racing motor cycles and components.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt that time no one in the company envisaged manufacturing mobility devices for disabled dogs. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the course of the company's history changed in 1984 when the CEO was paralysed as the result of a crash during a test drive. \u003cbr/\u003eDissatisfied with wheel chairs available on the market, he set about the design and manufacture of a wheel chair that he felt comfortable with.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe experience combined with the company's prior interest in racing led to the production of a range of wheel chairs designed for sports.  \u003cbr/\u003eUsers of the company's wheel chairs have claimed 90 medals in Para Olympic competition since 1996.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the jump from motor sports to production of wheel chairs for dogs took one further development. \u003cbr/\u003eLida Hediaki has been involved in the Willmog project since it began.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that the design began when Mogu, the company dog and mascot lost use of her back  legs as a result of a hernia during the spring of 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eDecades of experience in precision engineering and wheel chair design led the company to turn their skills to helping Mogu to regain her mobility.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe chair was originally intended as a one off project, but the company turned the design into a product line partly at the suggestion of her vet.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe vet who treated Mogu was Morohashi Kenji of the Chishirodai Animal Hospital.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains how a number of breeds of small dog like miniature dachshunds and corgis for example, are particularly susceptible to certain kinds of hernia. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also explains that while many dogs recover after hernia operations many others suffer paralysis.  \u003cbr/\u003eDog ownership has become increasingly popular in Japan during the last 2 decades and the pet industry as a whole continues to expand despite recession. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the results of a survey published in the industry magazine, Pet Sangyo News in February 2009 money spent on dogs and cats has increased by 20% since February 2008 despite a total decrease in family expenditure of 4.6% since the onset of the recession.\u003cbr/\u003eRealising that there was a demand and a potentially expanding market for dog wheel chairs OX Engineering began to refine the design of Mogu's Chair that eventually took the form of the product they named Willmog. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the moment the Willmog chair costs around $700 including fitting. \u003cbr/\u003eAkebono Katsue describes how the Willmog chair allows Momotan to take the same walks that she did before she lost the use of her back  legs and how the chair has improved the quality of the dog's life.  \u003cbr/\u003eDespite positive feedback however, OX Engineering still sees Willmog as a work in progress. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are now attempting to develop a harness with a mechanism
