Wide of new Acropolis Museum exterior
In less than a week, Greece's most modern building, a massive glass and concrete structure in the heart of the capital, will become home to the first of thousands of the country's most treasured antiquities.
The painstaking operation is expected to start Sunday (October 14, 2007) and last up to 10 months.
More than 4,000 ancient statues, friezes, sculptures and other artifacts will be delicately eased from their current location in a museum on the Acropolis hill and transported through the air along a series of three cranes to the new museum.
The first piece to make the 400-yard journey will be a 2 1/2-ton marble block from the Parthenon frieze, a 2,500-year-old sculpted strip depicting a religious procession that ran around the ancient temple just below roof level.
Supervising engineer Costas Zambas says that the operation is of great historical significance and needs in depth care and planning.
Zambas is a veteran of the long-running Acropolis restoration project who was involved in removing the remaining sculptures from the Erechtheion and Parthenon temples for display in the old museum.
The actual transfer will take at least a month and a half, although bad weather could prolong the operation.
Using three cranes up to 170 feet high, a team of 35 workers will relay the priceless artifacts, mostly from the 6th and 5th centuries BC, off the Acropolis hill into the purpose-built new museum.
A trial run is due to take place on Thursday. (October 11, 2007)
Hundreds of sculptural masterpieces in the old museum stand swaddled in white drop cloths, awaiting the journey.
Some wear padded harnesses.
All sculptures will be hoisted into styrofoam-filled boxes made of plywood and metal.
Each crate will take up to 2 1/2 hours to reach the new museum, travelling just a few yards above ground level.
Up to four crates will make the trip every day.
Conservationists have been busy at work in the Acropolis Museum restoration workshop assembling some antiquities, separating others, essentially repairing the works before they are ready for their trip to the new museum.
Konstantinos Vassiliadis is a conservationist at the Acropolis Museum restoration workshop.
He says his team is under pressure to complete the restoration of the objects before the move begins.
The two-story building was designed by US based architect Bernard Tschumi in collaboration with Greece's Michalis Photiadis.
It will contain more than 4,000 works, 10 times the number on display in the old museum.
Initially scheduled for completion before the 2004 Athens Olympics, the new 215,000-square foot museum was delayed by legal fights and new archaeological discoveries at the site, including a 3rd-7th century Athenian neighbourhood, which will be accessible to visitors.
Bernard Tschumi says the site is perfect for the new museum and its design reflects the layering of history.
Many Greeks hope the 20,000 square metre building will give a push to the government's longstanding campaign to persuade Britain to
return the Parthenon sculptures currently housed in the British Museum.
One of the reasons London has cited for refusing to return the antiquities, known as the Elgin marbles, is that Greece lacked proper facilities to ensure their preservation.
A glass hall at the top of the two-story museum with a wall of windows allowing visitors to look directly onto the 2,400-year-old Acropolis, is set aside in the hope that it will one day house the Parthenon frieze.
For now, the space set aside for the missing sculptures will hold replicas, covered with veils.
Some have criticised the new museum for its size and its location, saying it clashes with its surroundings.
The new museum is expected to open in sections next year, but the full collections will probably not go on view before 2009.
Clients are reminded:
(i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news
