For this happy rider is battery powered.\u003cbr/\u003eEveryday, Hu Wen spends 30 mins gliding through crowded downtown Beijing on his electric bike. \u003cbr/\u003eSharing the same thought with millions of Beijing commuters, Hu thinks cycling is the best way to avoid traffic jams during peak hours in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eNow many commuters have chosen to switch to powered bikes and scooters,  fed up with the city's traffic jams and crammed public transport.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's love affair with the bicycle is well documented. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Earth Policy Institute, a Washington-based environmental think tank, of the 130 million bikes manufactured worldwide in 2007, China made 90 million and exported two-thirds of them.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, the country has become the world's number one electric bike manufacturer.\u003cbr/\u003eIndustry estimates put the number of such vehicles on the roads at more than 65 million. \u003cbr/\u003eThat compares with 9.34 million vehicles produced, including 5 million passenger cars. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Chinese statistics, the country has a total of 24.4 million cars for civilian use, and some 430 million conventional bicycles. \u003cbr/\u003eAn hour's drive away from the capital Beijing stands the country's largest bicycle manufacture base, in Tianjin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city produces one-third of the electric bicycles available.\u003cbr/\u003eHanma Electro Mobile Co. Limited in Tianjin, is a Chinese owned electric bicycle factory, which is one of the first companies to start producing electric bicycles in 1998.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our first year quota was 2000 bicycles.\" reminisces the 65 year-old company CEO, Shi Zhongdong. \u003cbr/\u003eSales of the electric bikes in China have increased 400 times compared to a decade ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lightweight, battery-powered two-wheelers are in a class of their own, even as auto sales soar.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe cheap, green vehicles are well known as energy savers, as they use no gas, emit no exhaust fumes and are quiet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe electric bicycles use one degree, or one kilowatt-hour(kWh), of electricity for every 100km. \u003cbr/\u003eOther than environmentally friendly criteria, it seem customers love the EBike.\u003cbr/\u003eWang Jinshan, a sales manager at one EBike store, has a theory as to why the cycles are popular: \u003cbr/\u003e\"youngsters nowadays will be exhausted after cycling an hour or more to the office\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd cost is a consideration - Wang says the cheapest cars cost 40,000-50,000 yuan ($5800-$7300), but the price of electronic bicycles ranges from 1,000 - 2,000 yuan ($140 $290) which he says is acceptable to most people. \u003cbr/\u003ePlus, electric bikes in China involve few extra expenses: no drivers license, license plates or helmets are required. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the cycles do have one draw back - the battery itself. The lead acid batteries are not environmentally friendly and rely on 150 year old technology.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough they are slowly beginning to turn out more electric bikes equipped with nickel-meter-hydride and lithium-ion batteries, 98 percent of Chinese-made electric bikes still run on lead-acid batteries. \u003cbr/\u003eA Chinese-made battery containing 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of lead represents nearly 7 kilograms (about 15 pounds)of lead pollution. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause they are so numerous, and production conditions are less efficient and environmentally friendly than elsewhere, the pollution from the batteries' production, recycling and disposal is a serious health hazard. \u003cbr/\u003eYet, the promise of bigger profits from sales to a wider global market may help, manufacturers say, since overseas buyers are pushing for higher-quality bikes equipped with lithium ion or other advanced
