with him, said that Margaret Thatcher played a constructive role in promoting change in South Africa throughout her period as Prime Minister.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking to journalists in London ahead of the funeral of the former British Prime Minister, de Klerk said that Thatcher was a steadfast critic of apartheid and constantly urged the South African government to release State President of apartheid-era South Africa, serving from September 1989 to May 1994.\u003cbr/\u003eNineteen years after the end of apartheid, South Africans are still passionately divided over whether Margaret Thatcher helped or hindered the cruel system of white rule and prolonged the incarceration of Nelson Mandela.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heated discussions triggered by Thatcher's death show how influential South Africans believe she was on the fate of the last bastion of white-minority rule in Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eThatcher's spokesman said in 1987 that anyone who thought the ANC, then the leading anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, would govern South Africa was \"living in cloud cuckoo-land.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut others argue that Thatcher was strongly opposed to apartheid and racism and helped influence the white government to free Mandela.\u003cbr/\u003eMandela spent 27 years in prison during the period of white racist rule that ended with his election to the presidency
