Wide shot of Na Nach graffiti on wall
Blasting loud techno-music from their multicoloured vans, this group of ultra-religious Jews called Na-Nachs take to the streets of Safed, in Northern Israel.
Though reactions to their presence vary, for religious and seculars alike it's almost impossible to stand still while the Na Nachs perform their dance and chant the mantra that inspires them: 'Na-Nach-Nachma-Nachman-Meuman'.
The Na-Nachs are an offshoot of a larger ultra-orthodox Jewish movement, the Breslovs, but separated from them by the belief in a mysterious letter found in 1922.
An ultra orthodox Jewish man dancing to a techno beat is not a sight you expect to see in Israel.
But with their characteristic white hats and music, the Na Nachs dance, play techno-music and hand out bumper stickers, to the puzzlement and surprise of passers-by.
The pursuit of happiness, and avoidance of sadness at all costs, followers say, is at the core of their message through a direct contact with God, dancing, meditation and reaching out to others with an open attitude.
The Na Nach philosophy is based on the life and teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, a Jewish leader born in Ukraine in the late the 18th century and founder of the Breslov Hassidim movement, another branch of Judaism.
What sets the Na Nachs apart from other Breslovs is the belief in a 'letter from heaven' - or 'petek' - thought to contain a message from Rabbi Nachman himself.
The 'petek' is said to have been found in mysterious circumstances in 1922 in Israel by Breslov Rabbi Israel Dov Odesser.
The Na Nach mantra is a combination of Hebrew letters forming the name Nachman, while also making a reference to Uman, the burial place of Rabbi Nachman in Ukraine.
The mantra is written across all the Na Nach's white hats, bumper stickers and also spray-painted as graffiti on walls.
Na Nach and Safed resident, Gidalyah Golburt, says the service to God is the same as for other Breslovs, but that the emphasis for Na Nachs is spreading happiness and the name of Rabbi Nachman through dancing, music and selling books, activities that go under the Hebrew name of hafatza ('spreading').
Gidalyah Golburt's s story is somehow typical and common to other Na Nach followers: after migrating to Israel from America and following a more traditional path as an ultra-Orthodox Jew, Golburt became a devotee Na Nach six years ago.
He now lives with his family in Safed, one of the most important centres of kabbalah (or Jewish mysticism) in the world.
Other Na Nachs, like New York-born Josef Saban, have come to the movement after a more complex spiritual history.
Born a Christian, Safed-resident Saban was a pagan and hippy , then an orthodox Jew before joining the Na Nachs 6 months ago.
He now credits the experience as 'tremendously healing'.
But while the Na Nach movement seems to provide answers to the spiritual quest of its followers, not all agree with its principles.
While most passers-by and tourists watch curiously, take pictures and display a welcoming attitude towards the Na Nachs, others are more sceptic and - like Israeli tourist Matitiau Benzi - raise doubts about the authenticity of their happiness.
Israeli Rabbi Michael Boyden sees some similarities between the Na Nach movement and buddhism, observing that both put great emphasis in mysticism, through their mantra and singing.
However, he says, mainstream Judaism is based on more rational activities, like studying and praying.
Rabbi Michael Boyden belongs to Reform Judaism, a branch of Judaism that puts an emphasis on ethics as opposed to rituals and grants a fully equal role to women.
The Na Nachs say there is no official head-count, but that according to their rough estimates, there are between 500 and 1,000 Na Nachs in Israel. They are concentrated mainly in the northern and central parts of the country, in towns and cities like Bet Shemesh, Bnei Braq, Safed, Meron and Jerusalem.
The movement - devotees say - started to grow about 15 years ago.
Groups of Na Nachs are also present and active in the United States.
Most of the books of Rabbi Nachman are printed and provided by the Keren, an Israeli-based organisation affiliated with the Na Nachs; the Keren also supplies the vans that play a central role in the hafatza (spreading of the message).
The Na Nachs say that the money earned through the sale of books, other religious objects and donations, is used to pay for the fuel, while the rest goes back to the Keren and is used for printing more books that will be sold at wholesale prices to the general public.
The letter - whose validity is rejected by other Breslovs - is thought to have been signed by rabbi Nachman himself with the mantra 'Na Nach Nachma Nachman Meuman'.
Odesser, a fourth generation student of Rebbe Nachman, immediately adopted this mantra during his meditation practice.
Devotees recite the words several times a the day and credit them for bringing healing and joy.
Keyword wacky

<div
