But in 200 years the seedlings being cultivated by these  Indonesian women will grow to be towering redwoods.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is a rain forest re-planting programme in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe area has seen widespread deforestation from logging companies.\u003cbr/\u003eLoggers say they are re-planting the jungles, and one day they will be as lush as ever.\u003cbr/\u003eNot far away, remaining hardwood trees continue to be knocked down.\u003cbr/\u003eThis one took over 200 years to reach this size.\u003cbr/\u003eWhich leaves the question, how long will it take for the forests to grow back.\u003cbr/\u003eLoggers say they now use modern technology both for selection of trees to harvest and  genetic re-growth.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think more and more it's become important to leave a light footprint in the woods to  ensure that regeneration is adequate, and that we get as near as possible a replication  of the original bio diversity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Ralph Roberts, Canadian Government Forestry Consultant\u003cbr/\u003eBut ecologists are sceptical about soft footprints and complain that compacting of the  earth by big machinery makes re-growth impossible.\u003cbr/\u003eTaking out logs by helicopter helps, but is still rare to see in the jungle.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week a team of experts from the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable  Development took a trip to East Kalimantan to see whether loggers can replace the  biodiversity of  the rain forest through gentle logging.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Commission is looking for ideas before making recommendations to the United  Nations on forests and indigenous people.\u003cbr/\u003eThey want to be careful to get the loggers' side as well, to present a report that can be  embraced by developed and developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eOne logger they met said he was planting three million trees a year...90 for every one  he cut down.\u003cbr/\u003eBut opinions over the benefits of re-planting schemes vary greatly.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We aim to upgrade the forests with these reforestation programs, upgrade the  productivity of the forests.
