women give birth to fewer children, according to a government survey released this week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe population of Latin America's largest and most populous nation has soared from 90 (m) million in 1970 to 181 point eight (M) million in 2004, the Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE) says in the report.\u003cbr/\u003eThe survey projects that Brazil will have more than 259 (M) million people by 2050.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study also shows a drop in the country's birth rate. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1960, it stood at an average of six children per woman. \u003cbr/\u003eThat figure dropped to 2.89 in 1991 and to 2.39 in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil's population will continue growing but at a slower rate, the IBGE says. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1950s and 1960s, it grew at an average of three percent, while this year it has dropped to 1.44 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eLuiz Antonio Pinto de Oliveira, a researcher who tracks social indicators for the IBGE, attributes the lower birthrate to the wider use of contraceptives and the growing number of women entering the job market.\u003cbr/\u003eThe census bureau also foresees a much older Brazil in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2000, Brazilians under 14 years old made up 30 percent of the population, while only five percent of Brazilians were over 65. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the IBGE, both of those groups will account for 18 percent of the population by 2050.\u003cbr/\u003eThe growing number of elderly people signals an improvement in the quality of life for Brazilians, but the new demographics will affect the economy and social welfare system. \u003cbr/\u003eHelio Jaguaribe, a political scientist and sociologist, says Brazil will have to complement its public pension system with some kind of private scheme to accommodate the aging
