new technologies offer great promise to mankind and deserve to be encouraged.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two camps clashed for a second day at a Vatican-sponsored conference entitled \"GMO: Threat or Hope,\" designed to help the Roman Catholic Church formulate a position on whether GMOs can help alleviate world hunger.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican is expected to make a pronouncement on GMOs in the future, based on the data it has gathered during the seminar. \u003cbr/\u003eSeminars concluded with a discussion about the moral implications of science tinkering with creation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some adviser Dr. Doreen Stabinsky challenged that argument, telling the conference that genetically engineered crops were not contributing to solving world hunger and posed risks to the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his final remarks, Martino said it could take years for the Vatican to come out with its pronouncement, but he indicated he remained favourable to the technology and encouraged scientists to continue their work.\u003cbr/\u003eZambia-based Jesuit priest Reverend Doctor Roland Lesseps said the GMO issue was distracting the church from tackling what he called the main cause of hunger: the poverty gap.\u003cbr/\u003eA Vatican endorsement of biotech foods would likely draw praise from the United States, where biotech companies have been at the forefront of extolling the virtues of GMOs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it could ruffle feathers in Europe, which has imposed a moratorium on growing or importing GMOs because of fears about the environmental and heath
