Islamic tradition bars the depiction of Muhammad, favourable or otherwise, to prevent idolatry.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is understood that Amer Cheema, a 28-year-old master''s degree student, armed himself with a knife and attempted to enter the publishing house Axel Springer''s offices in Berlin, following an editorial decision there in February to republish the cartoons its national newspaper Die Welt.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was later charged for threatening the security guard who stopped him from entering the building, intending to kill Die Welt''s editor in chief, and resisting arrest. \u003cbr/\u003eHe had been held in pre-trial confinement since March. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to police information handed to Pakistan''s senior diplomat ion Berlin, Khalid Usman Qaiser, on Wednesday he hanged himself in his cell. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The German police informed us both on telephone and in writing, stating that they have to inform that Mr Cheema on 3rd of April, that is the day before yesterday, in the evening at 8 o''clock, committed suicide by hanging himself in the jail,\" Qaiser said. \u003cbr/\u003eHe added he did not know of any evidence to say Cheema had been tortured.\u003cbr/\u003eAn autopsy is underway, the results of which will be passed on to the embassy on Monday. \u003cbr/\u003eCheema''s body will then be released and returned to Rawalpindi, outside the Pakistani capital Islamabad.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Pakistani media reports, a hardline Islamic lawmaker Mian Aslam met with Cheema''s father in Rawalpindi on Thursday and promised to raise the issue of his son''s death in parliament.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, three hardline lawmakers from Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal - a coalition of six religious parties - introduced a motion in the National Assembly, seeking a debate on Cheema''s death.\u003cbr/\u003eThey allege that, according to relatives, the student had been tortured to death. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far there has been no evidence to back up the claim. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Cheema''s hometown of Rawalpindi, outside the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, his father expressed disbelief at what had happened.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He was being held for minor charges for just a month and a half.
