In other words, the oxygen that we usually get by respiration cannot reach the lung because there is a spasm in the larynx..this place here...and this a rather usual complication of Parkinson''s disease. In this case I think there is also an inflammation of the upper part of the respiratory tract. A tracheotomy is just a way to avoid the spasm. They usually make a hole in the trachea and the patient can either breathe spontaneously through the hole, or the respiration can also be assisted by a machine or by oxygen.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Oxygen is important, it''s the fuel for the brain, without oxygen we can''t survive. So oxygen is very important, if there is low oxygen in the blood, less oxygen can reach the brain and the brain of the pope is affected by Parkinson''s Disease, so it needs more oxygen than other people.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Surgeons inserted a breathing tube in his throat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe procedure was completed normally and lasted 30 minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican said the pope, 84, had been informed of his situation and gave approval for the operation. John Paul will be spending the night at the hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Paul, was rushed to the Gemelli Polyclinic hospital shortly\u003cbr/\u003ebefore 11 a.m.,   and was hospitalised for prevent him from being able to speak for an extended period and probably require a long hospital stay.\u003cbr/\u003eAnaesthesia is also risky for a person of the pope''s age, especially considering
