foreign minister said on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eSri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told a high-level security and defence conference in Singapore that the government's priority now was reconciliation with the Tamil minority in the Sinhalese-majority country, rehabilitation of Tamil civilians and holding free and fair elections.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our people are weary of war, yet they are resilient and want to get on with their lives,\" Bogollagama told the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual meeting of defence ministers, officials and experts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sri Lankan government announced last week it had ended the 25-year separatist war on the island after routing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from its last holdout in the northeastern part of the island nation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe military also announced the killing of top rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and his military and political leadership.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have overcome terrorism and Sri Lanka is poised for an economic takeoff,\" Bogollagama said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sri Lanka, absent of terrorism, will be the most liberalised economy in this region and could be compared with some of the most developed countries,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a forceful speech, Bogollagama detailed the growth of the Tamil insurgency, which began in 1983 for a separate state for the Tamils in the northern and eastern part of Sri Lanka. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations estimates that 80-thousand to 100-thousand people were killed in the war.\u003cbr/\u003eBogollagama, however, did not touch upon concerns that tens of thousands of civilians may have been killed in the final weeks of the military push against the LTTE this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN said earlier that seven-thousand civilians were killed and 16,700 wounded from January 20 through to May 7. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, these estimates circulated among diplomats were not released publicly.\u003cbr/\u003eAmnesty International has called on the UN to publicise its figures. \u003cbr/\u003eIt cited an investigation published on Friday in a British newspaper, The Times, which said some 20-thousand civilians were killed in the final phase of the war. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report cited unnamed UN sources.\u003cbr/\u003eThroughout the fighting reports emerged that government soldiers fired at densely populated civilian areas with little regard for their safety and that the rebels prevented civilians from fleeing the war zone and used them as human shields.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, independent verification of these allegations was not possible because the government had expelled the aid groups from the conflict zone and prevented journalists from reporting firsthand.\u003cbr/\u003eBogollagama refuted claims that the Sri Lankan military used heavy weapons in civilian areas during the final weeks of the conflict.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This was both fictional and well fabricated with ulterior and sinister motives in order to discredit the armed forces as well as to embarrass the government of Sri Lanka,\" Bogollagama said.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this week the UN Human Rights Council rejected calls to investigate allegations of war crimes and praised the government for crushing the rebels.\u003cbr/\u003eSri Lanka's allies on the 47-member council forced through a resolution condemning the Tamil rebels for using civilians as human shields
