Wide shot wax anatomy models room\u003cbr/\u003eA collection of rare and beautiful crystals is going on public display today \u003cbr/\u003e(April 1st).\u003cbr/\u003eThe unique exhibition in Florence contains crystals from around the globe - some up to 3 million years old.\u003cbr/\u003eHistoric Florence - the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany. \u003cbr/\u003eNestling in the streets of this World Heritage site is the Museum of Natural History - which is now home to a rare collection of crystals - the Giazotto collection.\u003cbr/\u003eIt contains more than 500 astonishing pieces from mines all over the world: from south Africa to Brazil, from Afghanistan to China, from the Alps to the Mediterranean.\u003cbr/\u003eAdalberto Giazotto's collection is aimed at preserving mineral specimens as if they were precious arts of work rather than turning them into items such as jewelry.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection was begun in 1949 and contains many specimens that are considered the best existing in the world for size and purity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe public will have the chance to enjoy unique pieces such as the \"Emperor of India\", an Aquamarine found in March 1995, 30 kilometres away from the Karur district, in the Tamilnadu state, in India. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is almost impossible to find such a transparent crystal uncut. \u003cbr/\u003eIt weighs just under ten kilograms - about a third of which is judged to be of cutting quality. The Aquamarine has been insured for 2 millions pounds (approx. $2.9 million USD). \u003cbr/\u003eAnother unique specimen, from the Messina district in South Africa, is an imposing Ajoite -  very rare for its purity and for its great central crystal measuring 55 centimetres. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was found in a rock while a new road was being dug.\u003cbr/\u003eOf great importance too are the rare Quartz crystals housed in a white marble stone.\u003cbr/\u003eThese were found in the ancient mines of Carrara, where Michelangelo used to personally choose the rough material for his statues.\u003cbr/\u003eCrystals are usually found in the shallow layers of the earth's crust, at an average depth of one kilometre. \u003cbr/\u003eNot very deep, taking into account the planet's radius is more than 6000 kilometres.\u003cbr/\u003eAdalberto Giazotto, born in 1940 in Genoa, started collecting small crystal minerals at the age of three, while living with his family in the northern Italian region of Val D'Aosta, at the feet of the Alps mountains during World War II.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was close to the Gran Paradiso mountain that he found the first 2 centimetres long crystal. \u003cbr/\u003eAs soon as he realised that to find high quality crystals he needed professional mining tools, he started buying them. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile he was studying in Rome, he started chasing small neglected collections in order to buy them. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Museum itself is a slice of history - being the oldest in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1775, Grand Duke Peter Leopold decreed
