Mediterranean dishes favour lots of fresh produce, olive oil and small amounts of protein and dairy products. \u003cbr/\u003eThe findings from a European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition (EPIC) study add to other research showing that a southern European diet reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mediterranean diet is well known for having an abundance of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, red wine and lashings of olive oil. \u003cbr/\u003eResearch by Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, shows that those who adhere to a Mediterranean  diet have a lower risk of developing cancer. \u003cbr/\u003ePrevious studies have already showed that the diet can reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Dr Trichopoulos it quantifies the reduction in cancer risk for those who eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruit, along with lean protein like fish, healthy fats like olive oil, and red wine in moderation. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter interviewing more than 25,000 participants all over Greece, researchers also found that the results weren't all or nothing - the more closely people follow the diet, Trichopoulos says, the lower their risk becomes.   \u003cbr/\u003eIntegrating the Mediterranean Diet into the modern lifestyle is both easy and rewarding, says nutritionist  and president of Sensible Nutrition in Hingham, Massachusetts, Debra Wein. \u003cbr/\u003eShe emphasises the importance of a varied diet, incorporating healthy fats like olive oil along with a wide range of fruits, vegetables, grains and healthy meats.   \u003cbr/\u003eFor those who want to eat out, there are many options for Mediterranean food, including Spanish Tapas, Italian, Greek and north African cuisines. \u003cbr/\u003eAt Oleana, an Eastern Mediterranean style restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, reservations are tight and tables fill early with locals familiar with this popular neighbourhood eaterie (restaurant). \u003cbr/\u003eAs the staff prepare for the evening rush, Oleana's award-winning chef and owner Ana Sortun is preparing striped sea bass topped with bulgur, peppers, and fresh herbs. \u003cbr/\u003eOleana gets most of its produce from the family farm run by Sortun's husband. \u003cbr/\u003eBut spices are ordered from as far as Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Greece. \u003cbr/\u003eSortun used to cook western Mediterranean foods with an emphasis on French and Italian cuisine, but after a trip to Turkey twelve years ago she says she fell in love with the lighter tastes and unique spices of the Eastern Mediterranean. \u003cbr/\u003eOleana's dishes are based in Arabic culture, with subtle spices and layered flavouring.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith so many universities in the Boston area, the crowd is very international, and Sortun says many come to enjoy the familiar flavours from home. \u003cbr/\u003eAs evening approaches,
