We are dealing with cow bone, we are dealing with camel bone and the goat bone. The bones, we do buy them from the slaughter and then we bring them here to the workshop and then from there we make a lot of ornaments out of bones," says company chair, Dan Arunga.
The bones are carefully cleaned, dried, cut into different shapes and sizes and stained by hand.
Victorious Bone Craft is made up of young entrepreneurs from the sprawling Kibera Slums in Nairobi.
The group learned how to use waste bones to make handcrafts in 2002 when they started a self-help outfit to provide employment to the youth in the slum.
Back then all the work was done manually. It was painstakingly slow until they introduced machines in the workshop that they currently rent, making it easier and faster to produce bone crafts.
Now they finally have the capacity to produce on a much larger scale and are determined to attract global markets, but there are two major hurdles they need to overcome first.
They lack the proper marketing for their finished products, so their exports are currently nil and come April 2015 a new railway line is going to be built through their workshop so they desperately need to find a new work space.
The group currently has 25 members who depend on earnings from the project for their livelihood. Every member of the group is skilled in the craft and also trained in marketing their own finished products.
The products made here look as good as ivory, but are legal and are as cheap as bare bones. A necklace cost around USD $6. A bangle around USD $3.
Unlike ivory which is harvested through the killing of elephants and rhinos, the bones they use are waste materials which they collect from local slaughter houses.
The group say it offers a legal alternative to ivory, an effort which it hopes to use as a marketing strategy to increase sales, especially to China and the Far East.
"There has been, since the beginning of time, a lot of interest in ivory and ivory involves killing elephants and it involves getting wealth, but it involves the killing of animals. Bone jewellery is something that happens after the animal dies, we take the bones of camels, the bones of cows and bulls and we are able to make beautiful handicrafts from them, so no animal is killed in order to make bone, no sacrifice is made in order to make bone. It is a way of recycling natural waste into beauty," says Estelle Strizhak, a marketing consultant for the group who originally moved to Kenya from New York.
"I think it is good, we as Kenyans to change our mentality of killing the animals. It is good, that we as Kenyans focus on bones, because when we are dealing with animals, we will not have the visitors from abroad countries come and visit us in Kenya here. So I would urge the people who are dealing with jewellery to focus on how they can turn bones to (jewellery)," adds Arunga.
Some of the finished products are displayed at the workshop office for people touring their premises to buy.
Most of their current sales come from local fashion shops. Occasionally, they get orders from abroad for custom made ornaments.
AP Television
Nairobi, Kenya, 16th November 2014
1.
