Ethanol (Alcohol) pump\u003cbr/\u003eA joint report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation says that the growing use of cereals, sugar, oilseeds and vegetable oils to satisfy the needs of a rapidly increasing biofuel industry is one of the main drivers in increasing high commodity prices. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report released earlier this week (July 4), looked at the 2007-2016 period and found that increasing amounts of maize in the United States, wheat and rape seed in the European Union, and sugar in Brazil, will be used for ethanol and bio-diesel production.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil is the world's second-largest producer of ethanol in the world after the United States, but is the No. 1 exporter. \u003cbr/\u003eBiofuels, which are made from corn, palm oil, sugar cane and other agricultural products, are viewed by many as a cleaner and cheaper way to meet the world's soaring energy needs than greenhouse-gas emitting fossil fuels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report, an annual 10-year assessment of global commodity markets, says that increasing amounts of crops grown for ethanol and bio-diesel production, is putting pressure on agricultural land and resulting increasing food prices. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Brazil, annual ethanol production is projected to double by 2016 from today.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready Brazil is a world leader in alcohol fuel, and expects to produce a record 5.34 billion gallons of ethanol in the current sugarcane season, up 13.5 percent from 2005 - 2006 season, according to recent figures from the Agriculture Ministry. \u003cbr/\u003eThe profitable business of biofuel has encouraged sugarcane plantations to expand in several regions of Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Campos region many farmers, like Helio Silveira, are turning their cattle pastures into sugarcane plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the sugar cane is harvested it is sent to the local COAGRO mill, which is owned by a cooperative of sugarcane farmers. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter grinding the cane all liquid is removed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe remaining crushed sugar cane is recycled and fed into the burners producing the steam that powers the plant.  \u003cbr/\u003eHigh in sucrose (saccharose) content, the syrup ferments in large tanks and is distilled into ethanol. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom here it will be distributed to fuel stations in its pure state or sent to refineries to be added to gasoline in the mandatory proportion of 22%. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the local rural university in Campos research has concentrated on developing new sugarcane varieties which contain higher levels of sucrose. \u003cbr/\u003ePaulo Brum Maia, of the Rural University of Rio de Janeiro says the original cane cane is wider but produces less sugar and so not as suitable for ethanol production. \u003cbr/\u003eNew more sucrose laden varieties are continuously being created. \u003cbr/\u003eLuis Eduardo Crespo, President Rio de Janeiro Sugarcane Producers Association says that the expansion of sugar cane cultivation will not threaten  the local environment. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that around Rio de Janeiro state it is possible to double the production of sugar cane without harming the surrounding area. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever environmentalists and geographers are concerned. \u003cbr/\u003eMarcos Pedlowski is a geographer specialising in the Amazon at the local State University in Campos\u003cbr/\u003eHe fears the expansion of sugarcane will produce a domino effect. \u003cbr/\u003ePedlowski says that soybeans and cattle being put aside to grow sugarcane and the push into the north will result in further deforestation in the Amazon.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil has been creating bio-ethanol for cars for more than thirty years, thanks to a 1970s decision by Brazil's former military dictators to subsidise production and require distribution at the pumps, giving Brazil the built-in supply and distribution systems other countries lack.  \u003cbr/\u003eMost drivers in Brazil choose ethanol, which is made from corn, sugar cane or other crops and is about half the price of gasoline in Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eEight out of every 10 new cars sold in the country are now flex-fuel models. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 336 sugar-ethanol mills are currently in operation in Brazil and the country produced 17.7 billion litres of ethanol in 2006 according to Union of Sugarcane Industries of Sao Paulo. \u003cbr/\u003eEDITORS NOTE  - Ethanol in Brazil and elsewhere is better known as regular Alcohol or Ethyl Alcohol.
