old completed one of the most important rites of passage for Xhosa men. \u003cbr/\u003eThe \"ukwaluka\" (Xhosa word for circumcision) ceremony marks the moment when young Xhosa boys in South Africa go through a rudimentary circumcision ceremony. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is the traditional rite of passage from boyhood to manhood and, without the use of anaesthetic, is a harsh one.\u003cbr/\u003eIsolated in the bush, sometimes for up to a month, the \"umkhwetha\" (Xhosa word for initiate) is kept away from family and friends whilst he learns the principles of Xhosa manhood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boy is then circumcised by a traditional surgeon and allowed to return home.   \u003cbr/\u003eFor Bambatha Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela and his second wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the \"umgidi\" - or homecoming ceremony was a chance for family to celebrate this important milestone in a boy's life.   \u003cbr/\u003eWrapped in a blanket and with his face painted red, Bambatha gingerly made his way back into the family homestead, surrounded by former initiates who had been with him in isolation.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral sheep had been slaughtered in celebration of the Mandela homecoming.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother of Nelson Mandela's grandsons, Mandla Mandela, was also at the homecoming. \u003cbr/\u003eIt had been hoped by the family that Nelson Mandela would have been able to have joined the ceremony, but the 94-year-old former statesman is currently in a Pretoria hospital, recuperating from an operation to remove his gallstones.\u003cbr/\u003eNelson Mandela has often
