Spielberg walked the red carpet preceding the award ceremony, a private event held during an annual gala held by the Foundation for the National Archives. \u003cbr/\u003eSpielberg got a private tour of the archive before the event and was able to see original historical documents including the Constitution and the actual 13th Amendment: \u003cbr/\u003e\"When you make a movie, you make up this stuff. You make up what the document looks like, based on the research that we did here at the National Archives. But then when you actually see it, it's an entirely different experience,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Records of Achievement Award honors individuals \"whose work has fostered a broader national awareness of the history and identity of the United States through the use of original records,\" according to the Archives. Past recipients include newsman Tom Brokaw, author and historian David McCullough, and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.
