Close shot tombstone\u003cbr/\u003eFor more than 50 years, Kashmir has been one of the world's most protracted border disputes, and has created two of the three wars fought by India and Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan was carved out of India after British rule ended in 1947.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 11 years of insurgency by Islamic militants fighting for secession have killed tourism, the mainstay for boatmen with their decorated houseboats on Srinagar's famed Dal lake.\u003cbr/\u003eFar worse it has left more than 30,000 people dead.\u003cbr/\u003eIslamic militants have been waging a bloody secessionist war in Kashmir - India's only Muslim majority state - since 1989, fighting for unification with Pakistan or complete independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistan-based Hezb-ul Mujahedeen is the largest militant group in the Kashmir Valley, controlling almost 1,500 guerrillas in the mountainous province.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group is believed to have the best logistical network and some of the best weaponry among more than a dozen Islamic rebel groups fighting Indian security forces to separate Kashmir from India.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity officials say the militancy had created more than 130 militant groups, most of them based in Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly about 15 of these groups are still active in Kashmir with nearly 3500 rebels.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly half a (m) million soldiers are deployed in the Kashmir valley to contain militant violence.\u003cbr/\u003eNow it is time to talk peace with the neighbour India accuses of sponsoring the rebels.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistani President and army chief General Pervez Musharraf will meet Indian Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee over the weekend to restart peace negotiations.\u003cbr/\u003eAbdul Majid Dar is Kashmir's top guerrilla leader and has emerged in public only once in almost a decade - when he held a press conference in August 2000 to announce a cease-fire with the Indian military.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin a week, however, the truce was called off when India did not agree to the group's demand to include Pakistan in three-way peace talks.\u003cbr/\u003eDar has welcomed the upcoming peace talks between India and Pakistan, but says the attacks on the Indian military will continue. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, the Kashmir valley continues to bleed and the graveyards are getting crowded.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammad Sultan lost his son in cross-firing between the militants and the security forces.\u003cbr/\u003eHis life has fallen apart - and his wife has still not recovered from the shock of losing her only son to mindless violence.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 30,000 people including militants , soldiers and civilians have been killed in Kashmir since 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for those who have survived the turbulent times, the scars run deep.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this trauma centre in the heart of Srinagar, patients line up for a session with a psychiatrist.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of them suffer from depression, anxiety and shock.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of them have seen their loved ones die a violent death and the trauma has stayed deep inside their troubled minds.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the security forces too, the battle for Kashmir has taken its toll.\u003cbr/\u003eThe casualty figures in militant attacks continue to rise and there is no let up for the soldiers patrolling the streets of\u003cbr/\u003eKashmir.\u003cbr/\u003eS. S. Reddy has been deployed in Kashmir for two years now and he constantly worries about his wife and two young children back home in South India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vulnerability of security forces to militants' bullets and explosive devices often leads to tremendous psychological pressures.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a lot at stake for the ordinary Kashmiris at the upcoming India-Pakistan
