This technique is exclusive from Almeria and Granada. Then we covered the sand crops with plastic. This is what is called usually a greenhouse. But in fact they are not greenhouses. Various shots of market\u003cbr/\u003eBlessed with an average 320 days of sunshine per year, the province of Almeria in the region of Andalusia, southern Spain is usually referred to as the \"California of Europe\".\u003cbr/\u003eAnd thanks to the construction of greenhouses and the application of agricultural technology the desert lands of the autonomous region have now become one of Europe's largest arable farms.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring General Franco's 40-year dictatorship the dry land of Almeria was known in Spain for its cinema studios where American filmmakers produced second class western movies;  and as a place of massive emigration towards richer northern Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the 1950's a handful of farmers started to build the first plastic greenhouses that now populate the landscape of the region of El Ejido.\u003cbr/\u003eInitially the dry soil was covered with sand that came from the nearby beaches of the Mediterranean Sea.\u003cbr/\u003eThis technique is known as \"enarenado\" (sand farming).\u003cbr/\u003eToday 16,000 farmers occupy a space of 70 x 15 kilometres  (43.495 miles x  9.320 miles) - 30.000 hectares - that produces more than three billion kilos of vegetables per year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe greenhouse area comprises the municipalities of El Ejido, Adra, Roquetas de Mar, Vicar, Nijar, Berja and La Mojonera.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a study published by the University of Navarra if all the greenhouses in Almeria were put end to end they would cover a distance equivalent to that of Almeria to Berlin in Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eAll of the agricultural activity in the region is closely monitored by IFAPA (Foundation for Agricultural Investigation of the Province of Almeria).\u003cbr/\u003eThe headquarters of IFAPA are located in La Mojonera, where sixty percent of the land is covered with plastic.\u003cbr/\u003eIFAPA was created with the participation of both Spanish and Andalusian governments aimed at increasing productivity and encouraging competition among the agricultural sectors in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Evangelina Medrano holds a PhD in agro chemistry and is one of the researchers at IFAPA.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's conducting experiments on the hydroponic farming of tomatoes and says such tests have to be carried out constantly in order to preserve and improve the quality of the products that are exported to the rest of Europe and other parts of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hydroponic tomatoes don't touch soil  - they grow from bags filled with oven-puffed grains of white perlite stone. \u003cbr/\u003eChemical fertilisers are drip-fed to each plant from computer-controlled vats.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready the technology applied has shown good results in El Ejido.\u003cbr/\u003eAntonio Vargas is one of the 16,000 thousand small scale farmers that has settled in El Ejido in the last two decades.\u003cbr/\u003eHe currently produces pumpkins in the four greenhouses he owns.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of his crops are sold within the European Union and a small percentage distributed to local markets.\u003cbr/\u003eVargas points out that to become a greenhouse farmer in Almeria there is no need to get an academic education - all farmers are sponsored and advised by local organisations such as COEXPHAL.\u003cbr/\u003eCOEXPHAL (Association of farmers exporters of agricultural products of Almeria) was created in 1977 and counts  some eighty percent of farm producers in the region as members.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong many of its activities COEXPHAL has been conducting experiments that introduce natural enemies in the form of insects and parasites into the greenhouses. The bugs chosen are the same as ones that the plants would encounter in open air. \u003cbr/\u003eJuan Antonio Sanchez is an agricultural engineer that works for COEXPHAL. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the experiments have allowed farmers to successfully grow new sub tropical fruits and vegetables in Almeria.\u003cbr/\u003eThe greenhouses of are covered with plastic to protect the crops from excessive sun rays as well as some plagues and parasites.\u003cbr/\u003eAntonio Eco Arlara, the local government councillor for agriculture and environment says this gives Almerian farmers an advantage over their colleagues in northern Europe. He explains that this is because the warm Andalusian weather means there is no need for heating and therefore less dependency on energy and fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal environmentalist Rosa Maria Exce says she thinks there are no major environmental concerns with this type of industrial farming. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Nowadays all crops are closely watched by experts in the field. All the activity is very much under control. The farmers have to observe the requirements set by the technicians. So I can say that anybody can taste a pepper or a tomato from this area because is very good.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe argues that stringent controls make production safe both for consumers and the
