He lives in Alicubi, Italy.
While some critics in today's press are bemused by the judges' decision to shortlist Creed's piece, the Tate describes it as a 'simple yet arresting spectacle', praising Creed's 'witty and often unsettling investigation into the role of art, its boundaries and its relationship with daily life'.
Art critic Tim Marlow is impressed, saying the work uses every available inch of the space: "The space become the work of art , and sculpture is supposed to be revealed by light. In this instance it is light, it is also darkness. It is very elusive that piece. And it is a kind of gesture but it is also philosophical and there is something quite interesting going on in what Creed is trying to do."
Organizers the Tate Britain gallery also named Londoner Mike Nelson, 34, a finalist for his 'The Cosmic Legend of the Uroboros Serpent,' an architectural installation comprising a dusty corridor scattered with discarded objects leading to a workshop.
Nelson was born in Loughborough, central England, and graduated from Reading University in 1990 before studying sculpture at London's Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1993.
The gallery explains that Nelson is known for his typically claustrophobic works, 'the mirroring of entrance and exit spaces to create confusion and doorways that offer choice..but simultaneously imply a wrong turn has been taken into unauthorised, private territories'. The rooms and corridors spiral in on themselves, reffering to a coiled serpent swallowing its own tail, which in alchemy symbolises recyling and rebirth.
Nelson has catalouged his own work into the store room space - to 'deflect interpretations by parodying those who try to classify what he does'.
That side of the entry certainly works if the reaction of artist Edna Wiess is anything to go by: "Well if it is a reproduced store room and it is a work of art now why wasn't the original store room a work of art. I guess because someone makes it, I don't know".
Isaac Julien, who also lives in London, won a place on the shortlist with his two video installations, 'The Long Road to Mazatlan' and 'Vagabondia.' Organizers described the first - which shows two cowboys swimming naked and dancing down a desert highway accompanied by three carnival-float beauty queens - as a 'film that explores longing, masculinity and homoeroticism.' The second follows a curator of a 'Pandora's box' of a museum and the imaganings of the past its artefacts trigger.
Julien, 41, graduated from St. Martin's School of Art in London in 1984.
The fourth finalist is 31 year old Richard Billingham. Born in Birmingham, Billingham graduated in fine art from the University of Sunderland in 1994. He is best known for his candid and gritty portraits of his family at home.
His shortlisted entry includes the video projection 'Ray in Bed', a home video featuring Billingham's alcoholic father reluctantly waking up as his wife brings him a cup of tea. It is featured alongside another video work, 'Tony Smoking Backwards' and a selection of landscape photographs.
The Tate's Simon Wilson admits some explanation may be needed before those unfamiliar with the issues in contemporary art today can fully appreciate some of the nominations. But he insists that the gallery takes the responsibility to attract new art lovers seriously, and offers background to each work in the room in which they are displayed.
The prestigious prize has been awarded every year since 1984, and is open to any British artists under 50 who have exhibited during the previous 12 months. Previous winners include Gilbert and George, Rachel Whiteread, Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley.
The aim of the prize is to raise the profile of contemporary art. The award has a history of drawing criticism for shock art - in 1999, nominee Tracey Emin split critics with 'My Bed', an unmade bed with grubby sheets, surrounded by cigarette-ends, bottles of vodka and condoms. 1998 winner Chris Ofili used elephant dung in his work, while Damien Hirst's winning exhibit of 1995 was the split remains of a cow and calf preserved in formaldehyde.
If this years entries are baffling to some, they can at least take comfort in the glamour of the forthcoming ceremony. The ÂŁ20,000 (dlrs 30,000) prize is to be presented to the winner by none other that Madonna.
The superstar singer was asked because of her passion for art - she has a private
