Wide of film strips with zoom in to show film reading \"The End\" (on left) \u003cbr/\u003eThe largest film camera museum in the world can be found, not in Hollywood, but in a tiny basement in Athens, Greece. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's owned by a retired postman who's been collecting cameras for more than 60 years. \u003cbr/\u003eA visit to the world's largest private collection of movie cameras is by invitation only, and it soon becomes obvious why.\u003cbr/\u003eRetired postman, Dimitris Pistiolas, started buying cameras as a teenager and never stopped. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he's 78 and has nearly 1,000 vintage cameras and projectors.  \u003cbr/\u003eAll are on display in a tiny basement of about 25 square meters (270 sq. feet).\u003cbr/\u003eCameras, some made more than a century ago, fill cabinets and cover every inch of wall.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's every kind of camera here, for all types of film. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's 8 millimetre, super-8, 16 millimetre, 35 millimetre, amateur and professional. \u003cbr/\u003eAll are neatly arranged, dusted and labelled. \u003cbr/\u003eAll are restored to working order.\u003cbr/\u003eA line of switches near the entrance of the museum is hooked up to run projectors, operate a drop-down screen, and activate an alarm system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum is in part of central Athens, where crime is common, so the basement stays padlocked.\u003cbr/\u003ePistiolas says he doesn't have a favourite. He loves them all, even the most plastic-looking. \"The first thing that I do when I get a camera in my hands aside from feeling like it's New Year's Day and that I'm getting a present, like a little kid. I will take it, I will examine it, I will restore it and I will put it there, in its place, to stay,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen video became popular in the1980s, movie cameras were easy to come by, but have steadily become scarce. \u003cbr/\u003eMany in Pistiolas collection were found in flea markets or through word-of-mouth.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is an effort that dates back to 1960,\" says Pistiolas. \"I made many sacrifices, because this material couldn't be bought even by the richest person. There is no shop to buy them from. You must search for them, chase them for many years to find them. I had the patience, the craze, the passion.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe collection has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records eight times \u003cbr/\u003eAt last count, there were 937 cameras in his collection. His record-holder status was renewed in November.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's only room on the floor for laminated posters of favourite film stars, like James Cagney and Judy Garland, or Greek actors popular in the 1950s and 60s.\u003cbr/\u003ePress cuttings are taped to the back of the front door, next to a prized certificate from the Guinness Book of Records, proof his minute museum is unique.\u003cbr/\u003ePistiolas insists he'll never stop collecting. Cameras, he says, are his lovers.\"I was published in Guinness and then I said 'I don't want anyone to beat me.' So I made it a race. I was competing against myself,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003ePistiolas started collecting when he was 15.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he married they eventually took over his wife's craft shop, that has now  become the museum.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My hair stood up on end,\" says Pistiolas' wife, Areti , when she first found out about her husband's hobby. \"I go to open some spaces in the house and movies, reels, cameras, replacement parts began falling out. Cameras?' \"\u003cbr/\u003ePistiolas' family watched the collection grow over their lifetime, changing their attitudes over the decades from disbelief, to acceptance, then to pride.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen televisions were rare in Greece, the Pistiolas family watched classic American movies on a cinema screen at their home. \u003cbr/\u003eHe remembers his two kids pulling reels of film through the house.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1942 movie 'Casablanca' remains his favourite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collector's daughter, Theodora Pistiola, remembers being filmed by her father as a child and says it  \"felt like Big Brother in the house\". \u003cbr/\u003eShe has hopes of moving the collection to a bigger space, perhaps with the help of a private of government sponsor.\u003cbr/\u003eHer father might take some persuading though. \u003cbr/\u003ePistiolas admits he's turned a couple of offers down.
