Sunrise over island
Poachers in India are being offered the chance to get on the right side of the law by protecting the country's wildlife.
India's wild tiger population has fallen by more than 50% over the past five years according to the Indian Tiger Project.
A large part of the drop in numbers is due to illegal poaching.
Now the government plans to create eight new reserves to protect the country's dwindling tiger population using the very poachers that once hunted the animals.
The Sunderbans mangrove forest stretches 10,000 square kilometres across Bangladesh and West Bengal in India.
A UNESCO world heritage site since 1997 it's home to numerous species of birds and animals including the iconic Bengal tiger.
Some 500 Bengal tigers rule the jungle here - but spotting one is increasingly becoming a very rare treat.
According to the Indian Tiger Project, tiger numbers across India have dropped from nearly 3,600 five years ago to about 1,411 today.
The Bengal tiger is strictly protected as an endangered species and the national animal of Bangladesh.
But the beauty of these magnificent creatures make them a common target for poachers.
Furthermore, tiger parts are valued as ingredients of some traditional Asian medicines.
In an attempt to stamp out poaching the Indian government is trialling a scheme that offers poachers a chance to become conservationists - and get paid for it.
More than 20 poachers in the Sunderbans have transformed from hunter to saviour of those very animals they were killing to earn their livelihood.
Anil Mistry used to be a poacher. Now he is a committed wildlife activist.
Mistry's former job required him to be a master of the jungle - not only did he have to be knowledgeable about his hunting terrain, but he also needed extensive knowledge of the plant and animal species native to the Sunderbans.
Now standing aboard a boat moving through the islands, Mistry shares that knowledge with tourists.
Visitors agree that people like Mistry make the best guides.
Mistry represents a growing tribe of poachers-turned-protectors, many of whom are now part of a more.
Despite tigers living in close proximity to human habitations, there have been no tiger-killings in the Sunderbans since 1990.
Mistry, now the principal field officer of the Wildlife Protection Society of India says giving an alternate source of income to the poor villagers has brought about this change.
The eco-tourism project has generated around a hundred direct and indirect jobs for local people.
The tourist lodges are looked after by trained villagers who ensure that no harm is done to the fragile eco-system.
"It is a noble effort, not only for the forest and the jungle but the people who now have a new aim in life and a new objective in their lives," said British tourist Clive Havare.
Farming, fishery and catching prawn seeds from creeks and rivers have long been the major sources of livelihood for the residents of Bali Island.
Rising sea levels are threatening many islands in the Sunderbans delta, submerging farmland and threatening marine species.
Economic hardship had forced many to hunt - despite a hostile terrain and dangers of tiger-killing.
Former poacher, Sandeep Sarkar is relieved to have given up the old job and instead take up cooking prawns for tourists.
As a member of the tourism initiative, Sarkar says his life has been transformed.
The concept of involving those who hunt due to poverty in other activities has found widespread support from the local communities.
The project also helps run vocational training centres for tailoring and embroidery for the village women.
It has encouraged formation of clubs with local people and school children who campaign against poaching and promote conservation of the biodiversity in the Sunderbans.
Officials say the successful experiment of involving local people in eco-development projects will be replicated in other places.
More than 25 village committees comprising villagers and officials to carry out wildlife protection work are already in
