APTN went to the children's book store The Lion and The Unicorn in Kingston, South West London to find out whether it was all worth the hype - and wait.\u003cbr/\u003eThe character of Harry Potter was introduced to the world in HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S'S STONE 18 months ago. Since then the boy with magical powers has become one of those things known as a publishing phenomenon.  Books are selling by the container-load worldwide, the film rights have been snapped up by Warner Bros for a substantial seven figure sum, the second volume of Harry Potter, HARRY POTTER AND THE THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS has equalled the sales performance of the first and now children are snapping up the third book in the series. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the figures are staggering. The print run for  the third Harry Potter book is 200,000, 60,000 greater that the widely anticipated Hannibal by Thomas Harris, of which 155,000 copies of the book are already sold in pre-sales before it hits book shop shelves next week. In the US the first book, published there as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, sold over a million copies and the second went straight to number one in the New York Times Bestseller list. Not bad for the story of a boy who begins his life in the first book living in a closet under the stairs with a  horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley, a great big, spoiled bully and hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact you could say that, like her own character, author, J.K. ROWLING's life has the luster of a fairy tale. Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone at a table in a café during her daughter's naps - and it was Harry Potter that rescued her. First, the Scottish Arts Council gave her a grant to finish the book. After its discovery by Bloomsbury (UK) Editor, EMMA MATTHEWSON and consequent sale to the company and to Scholastic Books in the US, the accolades began to pile up. Harry Potter won The British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, and the Smarties Prize, and rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. It also picked up two extremely prestigious foreign awards - the Sorcieres Prize 1998 in France and the Premio Cento per la Litteratura Infantile 1998 in Italy. Book rights have been sold to England, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Spain and Sweden. \u003cbr/\u003eA graduate of Exeter University, a teacher, and then an unemployed single parent, Rowling wrote Harry Potter when \"I was very low, and I had to achieve something. Without the challenge, I would have gone stark raving mad.\" But Rowling has always written; her first book was called \"Rabbit.\" \"I was about six, and I haven't stopped scribbling since.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor Rowling, the change in her fortunes has been slightly bewildering. But her daughter has no doubt about her mother's new career: when asked what mommies do, she replies without hesitation, \"Mommies write!\"\u003cbr/\u003eHarry Potter is introduced in the first book of the series as sleeping under the stairs of a family that loathe him, but in a single twist of fate he finds himself surrounded by wizards and owls, wands and jelly beans.  After his rescue he is taken to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a boarding school for witches and wizards.  This is the beginning of his adventures.\u003cbr/\u003eHarry Potter has never played Quidditch a football-like game played on brooms far above the ground, he knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility. \u003cbr/\u003eAll he knows is the miserable life he had with the Dursleys.\u003cbr/\u003eBut all that changes when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry ­ and anyone who reads about him, will find unforgettable. \u003cbr/\u003eFor it's there that he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic in everything from classes to meals, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him... if Harry can survive the encounter. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The idea that we could have a child who escapes from the confines of the adult world and goes somewhere where he has power, both literally and metaphorically, really appealed to me,\" J. K Rowlands was quoted as saying when the book was first published. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the second episode from the life of Harry Potter, The Chamber of Secrets, the Dursleys are so mean and hideous during the summer holiday  that all Harry Potter wants is to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny. \u003cbr/\u003eBut each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone - or something - starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe third book of the series is a darker and more emotionally charged story than the others, featuring an escaped murderer called Sirius Black from the wizarding prison and the arrival of the sinister Dementors to guard Hogwarts from Black. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd American readers can catch the third book in this red-hot series by ordering it via the Internet - two months before it goes on sale in U.S. bookstores. Even before the release of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban in Britain on Thursday, the bespectacled young hero's latest adventures had already captured the No. 1\u003cbr/\u003espot on Amazon.co.uk's Internet bestseller list.
