Exteriors of Penfolds winery\u003cbr/\u003eThe man behind  Penfolds Grange - one of the world's most famous wines has opened his cellar doors to share secrets of  the wine's success\u003cbr/\u003eGrange wine can sell for more than a thousand (aus) dollars ($783 US Dollars) a bottle in its native Australia. \u003cbr/\u003eSome select vintage bottles have broken records fetching sums as high as 52 thousand Australian dollars ($40,500 US) . \u003cbr/\u003ePeter Gago is the fourth chief wine maker in Penfolds' history. \u003cbr/\u003eHe estimates the wine in these barrels, the 2006 vintage, will be worth a total of $30 million Australian dollars  ($23.5 million US Dollars) when it is eventually released in 2011.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe wine has an interesting history which has played an enormous part in its success. Its creator, Max Schubert bottled the first Grange in 1951 and released it in 1952.  \u003cbr/\u003eEveryone hated it and it was panned by the critics.   Preferences at the time were for fortified wine, not a powerful still red like Grange.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut Schubert was so passionate about his creation he kept making it. \u003cbr/\u003ePeter Gago says Schubert defied his boss's orders and made the wine in secret.  \u003cbr/\u003eDetermined to continue he entered a 1955 vintage into a Sydney wine show in 1962 where it won a gold medal.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then the wine has picked up over 50 international awards including winning first prize in Shiraz at the Wine Olympics in Paris in 1971.  \u003cbr/\u003eAustralian wine writer and expert, Tony Love, says despite Grange's accolades it's not everyone's taste, but it has set a benchmark for quality. \u003cbr/\u003eGrange has been credited by many critics  for raising awareness of the  Australian wine industry and paving the way for other Australian wineries to make their mark overseas.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least half of all Grange sold is exported. The wine especially is popular in the United States, the UK and Sweden.\u003cbr/\u003eToday a new release vintage will sell for at least 400 Australian dollars ($310 US).  \u003cbr/\u003eA few years ago a bottle of the first  1951 vintage sold for more than 52,000  Australian dollars   ($40,500 US) at auction.\u003cbr/\u003ePeter believes the 25th anniversary vintage, the 1976, which already sells for $1000   ($780 US) a bottle is a collectors item and will one day sell for many thousands more.\u003cbr/\u003eBut are these prices over the top?\u003cbr/\u003eGago says everyone from collectors, wine lovers and business people love the wine.\u003cbr/\u003eTony Love says it has developed a celebrity like status amongst Australians and even mums and dads are buying single bottles to store for special anniversaries or birthdays.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wine can be stored for up to 50 years. But whether it's a 400 ($300 US dollars) or 4000-dollar ($3,100 US dollars) bottle the producers say  people are drinking the wine, rather than holding on to it.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe secrets behind the wine are pretty simple according to the makers  - high quality grapes sourced from a range of premium vines, some over 180 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eBut part of its secret  is also down to clever marketing. The wine is sold as the only first growth wine in the Southern Hemisphere. Compared to other first growths it is extremely rare.\u003cbr/\u003eGago explains how few bottles are produced compared to other top wines. \u003cbr/\u003eA vintage has been released every consecutive year since the first in 1951.  \u003cbr/\u003eTony Love says despite everything, the wine has earned its stellar position by building on its reputation over 50 years and he says purchasing a bottle or
