Wide of burnt-out vehicle and ambulance in the background\u003cbr/\u003eOn January 2nd 2014 two car bombs exploded on outside a hotel in Somalia's capital, killing at least six people and wounding eight, police said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe explosions occurred one day after al-Qaida-linked Islamic rebels had warned Mogadishu to brace for an attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Jazeera Hotel, a heavily guarded hotel near Mogadishu's international airport, was often used by foreigners visiting the country and government officials. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo men, who appeared to be suicide bombers also died during the attack when they tried to force their way into the hotel as the cars exploded, according to the police. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two men were shot and killed by security forces, police said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe second car bomb exploded as hotel guards and civilians rushed to the scene, causing most of the casualties. \u003cbr/\u003eNo one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the al-Qaida-linked Islamic rebels of al-Shabab frequently stage lethal attacks in Somalia near the seat of government and at sites popular with foreigners.\u003cbr/\u003eA senior al-Shabab commander warned civilians on Tuesday to stay away from government buildings as well as sites controlled or owned by foreigners. \u003cbr/\u003eThe commander said attacks were imminent in Mogadishu.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Jazeera Hotel has been the target of previous terrorist attacks. \u003cbr/\u003eIn September 2012, it was the scene of an assassination attempt on Somalia's president on his second day in office.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Shabab once controlled Mogadishu, but it was ousted from the capital in August 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite some security gains made in Mogadishu over the years, the militants still penetrate the seaside capital to carry out suicide attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eA car bomb explosion near Mogadishu's airport killed at least three people and wounded five on February 13th, according to Somali police.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blast was detonated by remote control at the city's busy airport junction, police said, who blamed the Islamic extremist rebels al-Shabab.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heavily fortified Mogadishu airport is the base for international diplomats and African Union forces that help support Somalia's government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bomb blast comes after a barrage of mortars hit Mogadishu overnight. \u003cbr/\u003eMortars also hit the city the previous week, raising fears of a return to more constant warfare in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eNine al-Shabab militants wearing military fatigues and carrying guns and grenades died after attacking the presidential palace in Mogadishu with two car bombs on February 21st.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was unharmed, but two government officials were killed in the attack, the interior ministry said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack against the compound where the president and prime minister live began with a car bomb explosion, followed by an assault by gunmen on palace guards, according to Somali police.\u003cbr/\u003eSomalia security minister Abdikarim Hussein, speaking at the scene, said seven of the nine men had been shot dead by security forces and the other two had died when the car bombs exploded.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are proud of our forces who foiled this cowardly attack,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe incident underscores a worrying new trend in Mogadishu. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite a period of relative calm following al-Shabab's ouster from Mogadishu in August 2011, militants have carried out a series of deadly assaults in recent weeks that have seen the city hit with mortar fire and pitched battles.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked group which has been waging war in Somalia for years as it tries to oust a Western-backed government, claimed responsibility for February 21st.'s attack.\u003cbr/\u003eA car bomb ripped through a tea shop in a normally quiet neighbourhood in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on February 27th.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice said the blast, which took place in a location where intelligence officers are known to congregate, killed at least 11 people.\u003cbr/\u003eWitnesses said the attacker sped towards the tea shop in a car before detonating the explosives.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was inside the building when the explosion occurred, and when I came out I saw many people lying dead, others were injured and were screaming for help,\" said Mohamed Adan, an witness at the scene.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have seen with my eyes eight dead people, among the dead was a young girl. I also saw four injured people and the scene was very ugly; there was blood and flesh everywhere,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe al-Qaida-linked group al-Shabab has increased the frequency of attacks in Somalia's capital in recent weeks, raising the spectre of a return to daily violence. \u003cbr/\u003eThe previous week an al-Shabab team attacked the presidential palace with two car bombs and seven gunmen. A car bomb exploded near a UN convoy earlier in February.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter controlling most of Mogadishu for years, al-Shabab was pushed out by African Union forces in August 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, al-Shabab has increased its pace of attacks in recent weeks, including the use of mortar fire attacks, complex suicide team attacks and even targeted
