They are pieces of the puzzle. I want to underline that we expect more such discoveries and more such revelations. We have a large team - over a hundred people exploring all of these documents which are in the thousands and we are committed to releasing them as we find them.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: John White, Deputy Defence Secretary \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the former U-S commander in the Gulf War is sticking to his guns.\u003cbr/\u003eRetired General Norman Schwarzkopf reiterated his belief that there are no \"verified\" reports of chemical weapons being used.\u003cbr/\u003eMy bottom line is this. As stated in the just referenced report that was released two days ago on page two that clearly states - quote \"during the demolition operations and indeed throughout the entire period of U-S occupation at Khamisiyah, there were no reports of verified chemical agent detections nor were there reports of any one soldier or civilian experiencing symptoms consistent with exposure to a chemical agent. What is this syndrome?\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Senator Dirk Kempthorne \u003cbr/\u003e\" My sense of logic just says - look, if we're talking about something where one milligram can cause a fatality - then  certainly somewhere along the way if this stuff had affected our troops, somebody would have come up with these symptoms and they didn't but I'm not dismissing it. It could still be there. You know when you look at what those troops had put into their bodies, OK before they  went over there - they were vaccinated against yellow fever, typhus, typhoid, cholera, they got over there and many of them were vaccinated against anthrax, some of them were vaccinated against botulism, they were living out in the desert in a very bad environment with insects crawling all over them and biting them and as a result they were using a hundred percent Deet (insect repellent) on their bodies and in addition to that some of them because they are worried about  these insects went home and got flea collars, that they put on their legs to, you know, keep the insects from crawling up their legs. And then you combine that with the air pollution that we had from the fires, and the fact that they were just in a foreign country and in a foreign environment - I don't think it is beyond the realm of reason to say hey - well you know, even the strongest constitution when bombarded with all of this might have shown a reaction of some sort or another.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: General Norman Schwarzkopf   \u003cbr/\u003eThe hearing also heard that far more chemical weapons documents are missing from the Persian Gulf War than previously known, possibly due to a computer virus and mishandling of records.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, the Pentagon has said it was unable to locate records from a critical eight-day period in March of 1991. \u003cbr/\u003eThis was immediately after the Gulf War, when Army demolition teams blew up storage bunkers now believed to have contained chemical warheads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new report, disclosed at the hearing, concluded that only 36 out of about 200 pages of the logs can be found.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, DC, USA, February 27, 1997\u003cbr/\u003e1.
