\u003cbr/\u003eTo \"squat\" in a building is to occupy it unlawfully and not pay rent for it.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than one hundred squats were emptied out last year, but according to official statistics at least two hundred still remain in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eSome squatters say they are occupying buildings because of the very high real estate prices in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish Royal Academy recently incorporated the word 'okupa' or squatter into its dictionary. \u003cbr/\u003eThe word describes someone who lives in an abandoned house or property. \u003cbr/\u003eThe squatting movement, which has also been popular in the UK and the Netherlands, began in Spain during the 1980's when real estate prices began to rise.\u003cbr/\u003eBarcelona, once Spain's manufacturing powerhouse, is full of old factories, which make perfect communal squatted dwellings and community centres.\u003cbr/\u003eVicente Escolar, a squatter in the \"Miles de Viviendas\" building, says he has a right to good housing but cannot afford it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Miles de Viviendas\" is a building near the city's beachfront which used to belong to Spain's Ministry of the Interior. \u003cbr/\u003eSquatters in Barcelona enjoy a creative lifestyle but are still highly organised.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Can Vies\" was built as a chapel and social centre for workers of the city's metropolitan railways in the 19th century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe building was occupied a decade ago and since then the squatters have organised themselves into a cultural centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThey often stage musical concerts and plays.\u003cbr/\u003ePatricia, a squatter, offers a creative idea for solving Barcelona's housing problems.\u003cbr/\u003eWelfare counsellor Ricard Gomar says some of the squatted buildings in Barcelona are beneficial to the community but others are not.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Can Vies\", which may soon be officially given to its squatters to serve as a 'centre of creativity', has also launched its own monthly newspaper called \"La Burxa\". \u003cbr/\u003eSquatters Luis and Oriol both work on the newspaper.\u003cbr/\u003eLuis says he thinks squatting is a social comment rather than a way of saving money.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Oriol says squatting is all about having the time to enjoy life.\u003cbr/\u003eWelfare counsellor Ricard Gomar says he thinks
