Kerry and Qureshi shaking hands and walking away\u003cbr/\u003eA senior US senator sought on Tuesday to soothe anger in Pakistan over a proposed multi-billion-dollar US aid package, saying lawmakers would provide assurances that the United States has no intention of interfering with Pakistan's sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocratic Senator John Kerry, who co-sponsored the aid bill, said lawmakers would prepare an explanatory statement to accompany the bill for US President Barack Obama's signature into law. \u003cbr/\u003eThe statement would \"set the record absolutely straight\" and correct misinterpretations about the bill, Kerry told reporters after meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.\u003cbr/\u003eQureshi pressed lawmakers and the Obama administration for the assurances just a week after he was in Washington praising the aid package.\u003cbr/\u003eQureshi said he wanted Congress, which has already approved the bill, to address worries about the bill compromising Pakistan's sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bill would provide Pakistan with one and a half (b) billion US dollars a year over the next five years to spend on democratic, economic and social development programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Pakistan's military has objected to language that links money for counter-terrorism assistance to Pakistan cracking down on militancy and\u003cbr/\u003emeeting other conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eNothing in the bill, Kerry said, impinges on Pakistan's sovereignty, and no conditions are attached to the non-military aid.
