This again tends to propagate throughout the global atmosphere and has effects on weather patterns throughout the globe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Adamec, NASA research oceanographer\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the key effects is on the likelihood of hurricanes. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists say El Nino's strong winds helped to suppress the chance of storms, like Cyclone Susan in the Pacific. \u003cbr/\u003eThose heavy winds tend to shear off the clouds of a developing hurricane, dampening their deadly potential.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Adamec says not so with La Nina. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result, he says: expect more storms, like Hurricane Linda seen in this three-D image, in the months to come. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"During a 'La Nina' the opposite situation occurs and those winds disappear and that allows the hurricanes to develop more easily than might normally occur without that shear.
