Various of bishops standing in line wearing robes, posing for photo opportunity \u003cbr/\u003eRoman Catholic bishops in southern Africa on Monday strongly condemned HIV prevention programmes that recommend condom use.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference said the widespread promotion of condom use was \"an immoral and misguided weapon in our battle against HIV/AIDS\".\u003cbr/\u003eIn a document released at the end of their meeting in Pretoria, the bishops said condoms \"may even be one of the main reasons for the spread of HIV/AIDS. Apart from the possibility of condoms being faulty or wrongly used, they contribute to the breaking down of self control and mutual respect.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMost HIV prevention programmes preach abstinence and monogamy, but they promote condoms - proven effective for helping stop HIV transmission - for those unwilling to abstain from sex.\u003cbr/\u003ePrevention programmes should replace condom distribution programmes with efforts to promote abstention, spokesman Cardinal Wilfred Napier said, saying it was God's way. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the bishops did accept that married couples could use condoms if one or both them was infected, as long as they abstained from sex while the woman was ovulating. \u003cbr/\u003eThis way, the condom would not prevent the creation of life, Napier said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican had no immediate comment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bishops' limited proposal for condom use would have little impact without Vatican approval.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his 1968 encyclical \"Humanae Vitae\" (\"Of Human Life\"), Pope Paul VI reaffirmed the church's ban on contraception, asserting an inseparable link between the unifying and reproductive dimensions of sexual intercourse.\u003cbr/\u003eThat position has been attacked in recent years by some governments and AIDS activists who say the church's blanket ban on condom use has hindered efforts to contain the AIDS pandemic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conference had brought together clergy from some of the countries worst affected by Aids. \u003cbr/\u003eIn much of the south of the continent, the infection rate among adults is thought to be running at over 25 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eA proposal to endorse the use of condoms had been put forward by South Africa's Bishop Kevin Dowling, who witnesses the consequences of the AIDS pandemic on a daily basis. \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa alone has an estimated four (M) million people living with HIV, the virus which causes the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eDowling had suggested that the church view condoms as a way of preventing death, rather than as a way of preventing the transmission of life and had argued that approving the use of condoms would give credibility to the church's position.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the conference, which includes bishops from South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland, rejected that measure.\u003cbr/\u003eDowling left the conference early and has not commented on the document. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Treatment Action Campaign, an advocacy group working to get treatment for people
