Wide of movie set \u003cbr/\u003eOnce renown for classic films such as Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn and Boy on a Dolphin with Sophia Loren, the allure of making movies in Greece has weakened over the past 50 years due to technical issues and red tape. \u003cbr/\u003eNow producers are fighting to restore Greece to it's former glory as a first choice for movie locations.  \u003cbr/\u003eHoping to tap into an industry that once placed it  firmly on the tourist map, Greece is trying to lure foreign movie makers into filming on its mainland, islands and archaeological sites. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hellenic Film Commission was set up earlier this year by Greece's Culture Ministry to facilitate foreign productions. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to it's director, Markos Holevas, Greece based its tourism policy on foreign movies that were filmed in the country during the mid to late twentieth century. \u003cbr/\u003eHolevas says many still equate the island of Crete with Mihalis Kakogiannis' classic 1964 movie \"Zorba the Greek\" which starred Anthony Quinn.\u003cbr/\u003eHe admits that more recently foreign film makers have shied away from choosing Greece as a location because of problems with technicians and red tape. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he adds that he feels these issues have now been resolved.\u003cbr/\u003eRecently Nia Vardalos, star of \"My Big Fat Greek Wedding,\" stood under a big light reflector among the dramatic ruins on the Acropolis.  The scene, along with others filmed at archaeological sites around the country will appear in the romantic comedy,  \"My Life in Ruins\".  \u003cbr/\u003eIt follows a decision by Greek authorities to relax their blanket ban on commercial use of ancient sites. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, authorities still vetted the script for historical accuracy and convened a panel of senior archaeologists to give \"My Life in Ruins\" final approval. \u003cbr/\u003eCanadian actress, Nia  plays a tour guide in the film. She says the script was left untouched by the authorities adding that the crew were asked only to be respectful of the ruins. \u003cbr/\u003eGreece's cinematic heyday kicked off with Jean Negulesco 's 1957 film, \"Boy on a Dolphin,\" starring Sophia Loren as a spirited Greek sponge diver who discovers ancient treasure on the island of Hydra. \u003cbr/\u003eHydra's current mayor, Kostas Anastopoulos says that the film attracted a wave of American tourists to the Greek islands and the Mediterranean in general which still continues today. \u003cbr/\u003eBoy on a Dolphin  was followed by the 1961 classic war film,  \"The Guns of Navarone\"  which saw Anthony Quinn team up with Gregory Peck.  Shot on the island  of Rhodes the film won an Oscar and two Golden Globes.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the same year that \"Zorba the Greek\" was being shot in Crete (1964), Peter Ustinov was playing out his role as a small time crook  in \"Topkapi\" in Kavala, northern Greece - a role that would earn him his second Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.  (The first was for Spartacus in 1960)\u003cbr/\u003eBut the years that followed started to drive movie makers away.  \u003cbr/\u003eFilming in Greece became more difficult due to increasing bureaucracy and a heightened fear that the ancient country's wealth of priceless architecture might suffer under the glare of the movie camera.   \u003cbr/\u003eFilms that might have belonged to Greece by default were lost to other countries:  Wolfgang Petersen's 2004 multi Oscar winning epic \"Troy\" was filmed in Mexico, Malta and Morocco.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the same year, director, Oliver Stone  also chose Morocco as the main location for his epic movie \"Alexander\". \u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, Greece has seen the occasional scene shot in the country.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 2003 sequel to \"Lara Croft Tomb Raider\" actress, Angelina Jolie jet-skied off the island of Santorini. \u003cbr/\u003eThree years earlier, the island of Cephalonia was the choice for \"Captain Corelli's Mandolin\" starring Oscar-winner Nicholas Cage.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Holevas says the government and industry insiders realised that conditions need to be changed to lure more movie makers back to Greece. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My Life in Ruins\" is the first major project helped by the Hellenic Film Commission. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Holevas  \"My Life in Ruins\" and \"Mamma Mia,\" the film version of the hit Broadway musical which recently filmed on Greek islands, were both originally planned to have more shoots in Greece, but because of incentives offered by Spain, part of the production was moved there.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that Greece need to follow Spain's lead and offer incentives to encourage filmmakers to film in
