With respect to security on the on airfield, the Third ID (Infantry Division) folks, elements of the 101st (Airborne Division), have I think secured the airfield to a fairly good degree, that does not mean there is not a threat from artillery, from enemy forces who have continued to attack through the course of today to varying degrees in varying sizes, but with no success. There are a number of sites on the airfield that we want to make sure we spend extra time to ensure there's not booby-traps and those kinds of things, but we feel like we can operate on the airfield with ease.\"\u003cbr/\u003e8. The fight through there was characterised by a number irregular forces mixed with Republican Guard or Special Republican Guard infantry fighting positions, rocket-propelled grenades, nests of irregular forces and technical vehicles that I described earlier, and anti-aircraft artillery weapons that were used in a direct-fire mode against our forces, so 23-millimetre, 57-millimetre anti-aircraft cannons that were used in a direct fire mode against our forces. It was, as was reported, intense fighting in areas, on the other hand in some areas people were standing on the sidewalk waving to us. So clearly there is confusion in Baghdad, clearly there is some chaos in terms of the command and control and ability of the military defending Baghdad. Saddam Hussein's defenders, US officials said on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Air Force Major General Gene Renuart said two task forces from the Army's Third Infantry Division swept in and out of Baghdad, but he declined to say if any troops remained in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe incursion was not an attempt to capture sections of the city, but to make \"a clear statement of the ability of the coalition forces to move into Baghdad at times and places of their choosing,\" Renuart told a news briefing at US Central Command in Qatar.\u003cbr/\u003eRenuart is Central Command's Director of Operations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Iraqi military, in a statement read on satellite television, said US forces were repulsed when they tried to advance on Baghdad from the south. \u003cbr/\u003eRenuart described fighting for control of the Saddam International Airport on Friday had been very intense, and the Iraqi defenders had included irregular fighters alongside members of the Republican Guard and Special Republican Guard.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that in spite of continued Iraqi attacks on Saturday, US forces had secured the airport and would be able to make one runway operational once the area had been searched for explosive devices.\u003cbr/\u003eRenuart also said that Iraqi state television remained able to broadcast despite several coalition attacks to knock it out, because it
